Best general Utility in the 100 Series

For a 100 series fixed blade I would go with the 121 over the half inch shorter 105.

I have used both quartering out a deer and the 121 is easier to peel out a backstrap with, as well as reaching in easier and taking the hindquarters and shoulders off.

The 118 D2 did a good job as well but I still liked the longer 121.

Now, if this was expanded to include the 805 SS in S30V, well that one would be my top pick. Altho, I have as yet to actually bring myself to use one of these. Maybe I will one of these days.

The 121s are interesting. I don't recall ever seeing one in the flesh (so to speak).

It couldn't hurt to note again that the 121 blades have gotten thicker and stiffer since the early ones came out.

The early blades were flexible enough to be true fillet knives.

The blades gradually got thicker and stiffer until the knife turned into a good all-purpose knife.

Pack, I agree . The 805 (all the 800 series are very fine) is a well thoughtout knife . I don't blame you for not using it . DM

Flatlander,

I have my opinion, but I'm holding out until you tell me who made these good looking sheaths that I asked you about on another thread. :p

It looks like Jack's work but the leather is a little dark for his . A handsome 110 sheath . DM

TAH, those are definitely the work of forumite "rudderjt" (Jack). Great sheaths at a great price. I've got three....or four.

Thanks David and Tony! I'll look him up.

Flatlander,

Now that I got my answer....:D The 105 Pathfinder all the way! Been using mine since 1975 when I was 14 years old. It's my favorite fixed blade for camping and kitchen duty. :)

TAH,

I'm sorry about that...totally spaced on your question. I don't even remember seeing it till now. Jack does great work and the 105 is my second choice after the 121 for the exact reasons you gave.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

A lot of people think of the 121 as a fillet knife.

The later ones were not so.

Handles got bigger along with blades.

Nice photos BG shows the difference . I have it on good authority that the 105 Pathfinder is also Joe Houser's favorite knife to take on hunts . DM
