440A is a fairly coarse steel (carbide wise) and both of those are usually WAY soft by manufacturers as they are delegated to "tough" knives. These two combined is a recipe for poor edge holding, especially in regards to high sharpness. Benchmade is running AUS-8 at slightly above 60 HRC which should be an interesting comparison.

Just FYI, I checked out Benchmade's newest catalog, and they list their AUS-8 at 58-59 RC now (I believe last year's listed it with 60 as the high end). I'm not sure if they changed their heat treating or just figured out that most of their blades were coming out softer and wanted truth in advertising. Either way it should be much better than CRKT's AUS-8, which burrs badly for me and is much softer. Also of interest was their composition of 8Cr14MoV, which has .75% Carbon (vs .8% Carbon in the Byrds) and 14.5% Chromium (vs. 13% in the Byrds), at a hardness range of 57-58 RC (vs. 61RC in the Byrds).
