I have three pairs of backroad blues jeans that I've been wearing for about 2 years now, and they've got holes in every pockets, super frayed/falling apart cuffs, and holes at the knee.
I wear a pair of Danner's Acadia's, and a Langlitz goatskin columbian biker jacket that weighs 10 pounds, so from the waste down to my boots I feel like Im wearin a pair of slacks instead of jeans like I used to know them....

So, I'm looking for a pair of super rugged pants. I'm used to denim jeans, but im considering other materials, as long as its more wear resistant then denim.

So far, the carhart black duct double knee work pants look the most promising I've seen, but I'm definitely open for suggestions.

the must have of these pants -
black
not wool
thick material that will not wear easily or quickly
good protection (heavy weight fabric)
basic pants set up, two front pockets, to rear pockets.

and if at all possible - nothing western, nothing fashionable. ala no ranglers, and no fancy gap jeans with the line down the side. i am not a cowboy, so I do not want to pretend to be one. working a ranch is hard work, and I feel that it deserves more respect then most people give it/research into it. iIm not about to pretend to be something I'm not, or advertise it in anyways shape or form. likewise, I prefer something purely work orientated, without any fashion freindly frills like multicolored seams, or super fancy cuts/wear patterns. the idea behind what I want in my clothing is to blend into the inner city/back allies/backroads, with the best gear possible. while I understand that to truly blend in, I'd have to wear what those around me wear, but in this instance, I dont require that drastic of a tactic. I just dont want to stand out in any way.
heavyness/how hot they get isn't a factor for me.

basically i want something that is up to par with a pair of danners, and a heavyweight langlitz columbian, that wont make people stare/look at me...

any suggestions?

Try Prison Blues work jeans - I just got two pair and they are well made and will last a nice long time. Take a look.

Carharts..come in black, plenty of pockets, literally bullet proof. Also try some of the knock offs, Like Walls

If you live out west, or are willing to order from a catalog, you should try the Ben Davis logger jeans. I have a pair I bought in CA that are made of very heavy denim, have double fabric from mid-thigh to mid-shin, and are riveted just about everywhere. They have some pants that are called jeans but not like the denim jeans most of us think about, and not nearly as heavy as the loggers.

I just bought some Carrhart Duck work pants, and my legs feel partially armored. They're still comfortable.

I have been very happy with Royal Robbins 511 Tactical pants. They are supposed to be used by the FBI and LEO's in training facilities. I know personally they are used by the instructors at The Site tactical weapons training facility in Illinois. The pants are made of heavy material, have lots of pockets, and are double layered in the knees. In fact, the knee area on the inside has an open pocket, where additional pads can be placed. :p

the prison blues looked really good, but their blue... and ive never been able to bring myself to wear color for more then a few weeks at a time. dont know exactly why...

i'll definitely check out filson, and the duct pants are sounding better now that a few people have said they feel comfortable but also like armor.

definitely gonna check out the ben davis as well... though, wile i dont really care how hot they are, id like to avoid full winter lining. cause ive found that in winter, things that are meant to keep your warm like that make me cook.... where as i have no problem with my super thick acadia's and my 2 layers of shirts even in 90 degree weather? again, dont know why im like that....i'll defitely check them out though :D

thanks :D:D

Carhartt works the best for me.

Another good candidate is surplus German army moleskin pants. Cheap, thick cotton, the only downside is that they are a bugger to dry.

I've had good luck with Wrangler Pro rodeo cut jeans ,think thats what they're called, they're the ONLY jeans I can find that are long enough any more (wear a 32X40  ) anyhow, they last longer than any other jeans I tried with baling hay. I usually can get a year out of a pair of wranglers, and thats all I wear. Buy a half dozen or so pairs every fall. They're made out of a lot heavier material than most jeans and only cost about $25 a pair.
They do fit a little different, but with riding horses and all I actually think they're more comfortable YMMV.

I wear nothing but Royal Robbins 511 Tactical pants and shorts. While they are great pants, I doubt the canvas they use will hold up to your standards. The do seem to last longer than Wrangler Pro Rodeos the 511s replaced. If it's durablility you want, buy Filson.

Carrhart double fronts come in black. If black wasn't a requirement then Filson Tin Pants are as tough as they are uncomfortable.

Although you can't get them in black, Filson Oiled Tin Cloth is near indestructable. Mind you, the price is high but so is the quality.

i went ahead and bought the carhart black dungarees. i i ended up getting the 34x34, because i tend to want a slight bit of room in the waste to help with tucking things in, or packing extra clothing under neath. little did i know that by inseam the meant crotch to floor... so they are 48" total length from waist to flor... meaning 10" has to be shaved off by fatty 5" thick rolled up cuffs.

so what i would need is 32x24, wich i dont think they make. and i would be fine with just hemming the extra off, accept that its double knee, so the double layer goes all the way to my ankles. wich again, is fine, having a double laying downt eh front of your pants is a good thing. if i do hem them, i'tll be an inch below the double knee....

very nice build, and the cavas is reletively comfortable for what it is, thick and with a "firm hand". im really likeing 4 features on these, the double layer on the back pockets, because moth my wallet and my keys eat through that area of my pants within about 6 months every time. the canvas pockets, wich are much sturdier then any other pocket material ive come across. and the 2 side pockets... the ones at about finger tip length on the very sides of the legs. perfect for folder carry, or anything else you need to be at your fingertips immediately without causeing a big fuss (reaching into your back pocket to pull out something is a pretty agressive looking motion...)

the one thing i have against them, im not used to wearing new black :). i work at a place that has flower, so it gets dusted with the stuff from mid shin down. not that i have any complaints about them being extra black, i just never noticed how much flower gets on you when you work with it for 6 hours :)
