Best Hatchet for the money

New guy here. I agree that the swedes make some great axes as I have one. But for the money the Cold Steel tommies are great. They even have a new modern type camp axe out now. I have the viking and a basic throwing axe from them, and they are about bullet proof. A lot for the cash I assure you.

I notice a lot of folks recommending estwing. Why would you want a metal handled hatchet? That transfers all the blows and vibrations back into your arm/elbow. Regardless of having a stacked leather handle.

Always go for a wooden handled hatchet when you can.

Lee Reeves is tough to beat. If you order one direct, be prepared to wait a year.:( But in the end it's worth it!:D:thumbup:

Some US options are Snow & Nealley and Council Tool. They are drop forged but use quality steel.

If you're correct that's nice to know. I e-mailed Snow and Nealley last week about their forging process and haven't received an answer yet. I also saw on their website where they claim a Rockwell hardness of 45-55. I though that was a broad range and requested some clarification.
I ended up ordering a Wetterlings 20" but might still be interested in the Snow and Nealley Hudson bay axe in the future.

Older hatchets that I have.Norlund,Collins,Plumb,True temper,KeenKutter,Eclipse. All are great with good balance. Most have new handles.I think the most I have in any is $25.00 including new handle.
I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Hello all, Never owned a goot Hatchet before. Not looking to spend hundreds but , Maybe a little over 100$. Don't know much about em or any good brands/makers. Got a month long camping trip in the woods coming soon and need me a good one!!! Please fill me in on what to get!!:o THANKS!

Tactical Tomahawk by SOG is just $27.99 on amazon and it has 4.6 rating out of 5 by 570 users. That many users can't be wrong. If you look at the list of Hatchet, Tomahawk, Hawk and Axe here , you can select good rated one well below $100.

Nice axes'! I have a 1945 double bit sager, Hults Bruk, 2 Winchesters' (isn't really Winchester, they stamped that to promote their company as a "gift" to people asking for it". '1 db 1 sb) anchor Plumb nearly mint, & Black Raven, as for the "goodies" sides my 3 Norlund tomahawks', Collins, Zeniths, couple Craftsman, BSA, Plumbs', Manns', and all the other crap I have, axe wise in the shed i keep locked up. lol

A nice blog I made; maybe find your axe you want?

smith and wesson extraction and evasion or the m48 komanndo by united cutlery. both under $60 and i own both and can vouch for each. i do a review on both of them on my website here

Estwing is a great product for the money and made in the U.S.A.

The best hatchet for the money, imo, is the Husqvarna hatchet. Swedish-made (currently by Hults Bruk), 15" overall, with a 1.25 lb. head and a good hickory handle. You can find them for <$45 if you look around, and you could spend a lot more and not get a whole lot more, except cosmetics.

I have 3 of them. They are excellent, and i don't mean "excellent for the money"... they're just excellent.

Great chopper, great thrower, hold an edge really well, and take a shaving sharp edge.

45 bucks is damn good for something like that.

Something like Hults bruks, Plumb or Norlund from the flea market and a new handle for far less..The old hatchets are good quality.

Just got a GB mini, and I have to say this thing is sweet, paid a fair amount for it but I expect to have it for the rest of my days on this earth,

Vintage is the best bang for the buck, and hard to beat at any price. Most of these I picked up dirt cheap.

And I do own Husqvarna, Wetterlings and GB's. I like them all.
