Best home hiding places?

Safety deposit box? Not sure the cost, but she could keep other valuables in there too, like jewelry.

Open an online brokerage account? Some discount brokerages have no minimums to open an account, no fees, and the money can just sit there uninvested if she wishes. Since they're discount brokerages, everything is online so no statement will ever come to the house. Heck, as long as she's doing that, open it as an IRA account, get a big fat tax break, and a financial new start to her new life.

Best luck to your sister.

Clean out a bottle of mustard or another opaque condiment bottle and stash it in there, in the fridge with the rest of the condiments.

Honestly, I think the best home hiding places probably aren't discussed on a publicly-viewable internet forum...:D

Kind of like not publicly posting what my EDC is....

But maybe that's just me.

I have heard of the slit in carpet thing and think that is a good idea as well as in plastic bag under the bag of garbage. I also have heard of people hiding it inside a cold air duct by taping it up on the inside.

Not sure if a prepaid card would be traceable but if not, that is a good idea as then all you need to do is either carry or hide the single card. I knew a lady (my childhood friends grandma) that hid money inside a freezer in a container and that doesnt work. She had a break in and it was found fairly easy as alot of people know that idea.

It also depends on how much you have to hide. If it is quite abit, then you might want to split it up and make a couple of hiding spots, maybe some stashed and some on a card.

Of all the ideas, I like the book (if she has a lot of books) or the prepaid gift card. In my house, we've got so many books that a random one is about as safe as anything. Or, you can "hide" your cash like we do, in a jar in the cupboard that says "vacation stash" :o

I dont know if they can trace the gift card at all, but I don't think you can get "cash back" on them so that may be a concern.

This is an excellent thread for any burglar looking to improve his game.

It is hard to imagine this woman has no friends trustworthy enough to ask them to hold it.

I don't believe that burglars are visiting Bladeforums looking for ways to be better burglars anymore than criminals are visiting the knifemaking forum looking for ways to make better shivs.

As far as trusting friends, I have friends that I trust with my life, but I wouldn't trust anyone with my life savings.

In a plactic bag under dirty clothes in a hamper.

In a plasctic bag under the bag of trash in a kitchen garbage can.

NEVER hide things in the freezer or refrigorator. I've spent time behind bars and I've listened to the stories of many burglars and other various criminals and I can tell you that the freezer/refrigorator is a well-known hiding place for valuables, not just for ordinary citizens, but also for drug dealers and other criminals. The freezer/refrigorator is a prime target for search.

I've never heard of a criminal taking the time to search in the hamper or under the trash, not even when they spent all weekend in the home and tore the place apart.

Long ago, in a less sober time, I stashed some stuff in the back of the freezer. Just left it there for a couple days, but my housemate's mom and her boyfriend stopped by when I was at work. She was a concerned mom and checked the fridge and freezer to see how well her son was eating. He, on the other hand, was a vice cop. Oops.

Luckily, he was not a very strict vice cop, didn't bother to do anything but scare the hell out of me.

I had a similar situation in high school, only it was a brick pile that had been in the yard for years... stayed at a friend's house for a few days, came back and we had a new brick walkway. Busted.
So yeah:
Freezer is bad, and more importantly,
think about the rare things that might expose the stash - they can happen.
A dead (fake) electrical socket might just get tinkered with, furniture might be moved, food in freezer might be tossed out without remembering it was there... take time to think through what might go wrong.

take out a bottom drawer in the kitchen, tape it to inside face of the cabinet, under the drawer. Seriously though. How much time and effort is he going to spend looking for something he doesn't know she has.

Legally, there's no difference between opening a personal bank account and cashing a check and physically hiding the cash. Just open a bank account a d deposit the money. If things don't work out, this will not be an issue. If they reconcile, the can just transfer the money to their joint account.

If there is that much distrust going on I sort of doubt it is going to work out.

The safety deposit box is one of the best ideas. Plenty of places to stash in a house, but there are problems with all of them (house burns down being one of the more extreme)

Good luck to her

Safe deposit boxes are good for security and also good because there isn't really any record of what is in there. You can always just say I had my passport in there for safe keeping, unlike a bank account which has a record of money in and out.

Down sides iare that it costs money to have one, there will be some record of having the box and you can't access it off hours. It can also be "frozen" if there is a court order.

in a ziplock bag taped to the interior bottom of a bucket of laundry detergent

taped to the non-visible side of the HVAC unit that is accessible when the filter is changed
