  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Best inexpensive "beater" fixed blades

I would recommend either the Schrade SCHF9, amazing knife for the price, or saving up for the BK2. I beat on the Schrade every time I use it and it has held up great. Sharpening can be pain due to the blade shape, but it has worked great for everything I've thrown at it. The grip feels good and the sheath is good for the price. Even though I bought the Schrade, I still find myself looking at and thinking about buying the BK2, especially after getting the BK11 and BK14. For the extra money, the BK2 is made in the USA and the quality can't be beat.

$30 gerber basic. 3 inch blade friction lock sheath 4 way reversible, a small fixed blade for the days you may not need a biger blade carries well

The Schrade SCHF3N has some pretty good reviews. It has a 6.4 inch blade, but is hollow ground, which I don't like. YMMV, of course. KnifeCenter has it for $43.95.

The strange named but beastly "Combat Ready Cuma Battle Cleaver Blade" which is a competition type chopper made from 5160, close to .250 inch thick, micarta grips on a blade angled forward to be front heavy, ergonomic while chopping and tough as heck. About 9.25 inches long blade and around $40 dollars give or take a couple. If you really like choppers you might give this one a try. It's all set up. Just change the edge to suit yourself if the stock one isn't to your liking ( mine is fine BTW) and it's pretty much good to go.

For $120 ish the Browning Crowell Barker competition is an excellent performing chopper as well. It has been written u enough here so I feel ok not describing it.

I would look at the Condor Bushlore or Mini-Bushlore, Hudson Bay (larger blade than you are looking for), and the Kephart. The Kephart is a nice little knife with a nice leather sheath. There are a couple of newer ones this year that I need to handle and take a look at myself. Probably will do that at Blade in June.

Condor makes good functional knives in a reasonable steel. They are knives most would not be afraid to use for most any purpose a knife might be used for.

Always look at the Mora knives. I'm not a big Mora owner, but they are very useful knives at a price point that allows you to buy a couple and use the heck out of them. I just like a knife with a bit more heft.

The Kabar Becker BK-16 or BK-17 is a great all around knife that just exceeds your budget by about $20. Very very useful size and my favorite Beckers.

I am not a huge Gerber fan, but the Big Rock Camp is a lot of knife for the price. I got one in a trade and it has a little bit of "WOW!" factor.

I also like CRKT Komer Freerange Hunter. My wife carries that on her backpack. Of all the knives I have had -she picked the Komer.

Both are well within your price range.

I picked up a small, folding stainless steel trowel for grubbing in the dirt. Check out your second hand stores or yard sales for a used Old Hickory or Green River knife. Be careful though, a used Old Hickory 5" butcher is a $5 knife. Green River a bit more. Or you could buy them new.
