Hello!
I have trained in Wing Chun (Wing Tsun actually) for 2 1/2 years and I'm now training JKD Concepts.
I'm very much interested in the martial arts of southeast asia, but there's no school available here.
So far so bad, I'd like to buy a tape on empty-handed FMA, Silat, or Kuntaw but many people tell me that such videos show little information and have many filler drills.
I don't need many drills. Show me some and I'll will create my own, to practice certain things.
So do you know any good tape which has much information und less filler?
What about the tapes with Rick Hernandez and what about "Reflex Action" with Bob Orlando?
Thank you in advance!

P.S.: Yes, I'm perfectly aware of the fact that one cannot learn an art by video.
I just want to have a look at these arts, practice the techniques shown, play around with them with a friend and incorporate them into my fighting stlye (JKD Concepts).

Two of the best Panantukan videos on the market are:

Harley Elmore's Panantukan The Art of Filipino Boxing available at www.warriorswaytx.com

and

Rick Faye's Sunday Seminar Video on Panantukan available at www.mnkali.com.

They are both excellent videos. Get them both you won't be sorry.

Gumagalang,
Todd

I can't find the Panantukan Video at www.mnkali.com. There are only these:

Sunday Seminar Videos

Knife
Trapping
Jun Fan/Jkd
Sumbrada
Palm Stick Workshop
Walking Stick for Self Defense

The Video at www.warriorswaytx.com is very attractive, especially as it is also available as DVD.
I'm just concerned that some (lots) stuff in there will already be known to me, when I get "Dan Inosanto The Definitive Collection Panantukan" from a friend.
Are there other tapes on other empty-handed stuff beside LaCoste/Inosanto blend?

I have all 3 of the videos:
The Definitive Dan Inosanto/Panatukan
Harley Elmore The Art of Filipino Boxing
Rick Faye's Sunday Seminars Panantukan

Yes there is some overlap of information but not a lot. Guro Harley's tape is broken down and organized very well. If you are looking for more techniques try to get the Rick Faye tape. If it's not listed on the website anymore email Diana and ask her if it is still available. This tape really opened my eyes to how vast the Panantukan curriculum really is. Rick Faye also has a great book on Panantukan available.

You could also try Rick Tucci's Maphilindo series for more Silat influence. Terry Gibson also has an excellent 6 tape series on Maphilindo. I know Guro Harley is coming out with his own Maphilindo tape later this summer.

Todd

hello,

i've not seen the vids recommended by TLS yet, but i've only heard good things about them off other forums.

one i did see, ted lucaylucay's PANANTUKAN from unique publications, is probably better suited to beginners with no inkling of boxing. it's been a while since i've seen it, i should really rewatch so i can comment. i vaguely recall that if you have a sound grasp of fundamentals of boxing, you would not need this vid. i don't recall what made this vid panantukan, i.e., what was specifically FMA and not western boxing in this vid. of course, there are those that may argue that modern boxing came from panantukan/filipino boxers. so a vid on panantukan would look like modern boxing.

Thank you guys for your advice.
Maybe you could do a review of any of the tapes mentioned above.
This might be interesting for other people too.

For silat, I would check Rudy Terlinden's tapes and for Kuntao check Willem deThouars tapes.

Bill

Copis, can you tell me where to get the Willem DeThouars and Rudy Terlinden tapes and which ones to choose? I just want the most basic, effective stuff.

kuntaosilatdethouars.com

cfwenterprises.com

Mr Terlinden (RIP, he will be missed) has 2 tapes and Mr deThouars has 2 tapes for sale on his site.

Some other of Mr. deThouars' tapes are for sale thru:

eurekainternalarts.com

BTW, Mr deThouars is teaching a seminar in Westminster CO. open to the public tomorrow from 2-5. Contact me if you are interested and we will see if there is an open spot.

Pendekar Paul deThouars is the oldest brother. Maha Guru Victor deThouars is the youngest. Bapak Willem deThouars is in the middle.

Paul and Victor are BIG guys. Willem is small and skinny. Their individual perspective on their family's art is influenced by their body size.

BTW, I have only studied Kuntao Silat deThouars for 3 years, I am a beginner...

Always in Hormat,

Bill

Guys,
Prof. Rick Hernandez has some tapes on Kuntao! He is a very good Instructor & a great guy to deal with!
jim

Yes, I heard that the Rick Hernandez tapes are great, but they're hell of expensive. More than $100 to get them here in Germany.

Novice,

I just realized you were overseas!

The deThouars family are Dutch/Indonesian, commonly referred to as "Indos" The second to the oldest deThouars brother is "Uncle Maurice" Another notable silat family is the deVries family (cousins of the deThouars family)

The deVries family and Uncle Maurice reside in Holland. I suspect that there is a lot of silat in Holland due to the large size of the indonesian community there.

I have no info on schools there. It might be worth for you to investigate further...

feel free to email me, If I can be of any help

Bill

Haven't found any schools on the net which appeal to me.
The styles I've found have more "exagerated" movements like in Wushu. I'm more looking for a combative style and spend my next school hollidays (2 weeks) in the Netherlands to train there.
