Best Kershaw knife to buy

Junkyard Dog 2.2, it's got a super unique pocket clip and a composite blade. Definitely unique and awesome :)

It's big, it has this huge <thwack> when you open it, and it looks amazing in composite. The new ones come in a cool little storage bag.

^^ This. Or a 4380DM Double Cross. I have both and prefer the 4380 to the 4150. Both are VG-1 clad with 16 layers of 420. Classy little knife. Here's a link to one of Gary Graley's reviews on it and some great pics too. Whatever Kershaw you pick, deal with Kershawguy...you can't beat his prices or service.

How is the Damascus steel on the 4150/4380? Compared to 8Cr13MoV and 14C28N? I'm wanting to get my dad something he can carry around at work his office (I want it to be a Kershaw), and have been wondering how the steel is on those two.

Thanks, [and sorry for the slight hijack].

The only one I regularly use is the 14C28N; it took an edge pretty easily but with minor daily use I haven't had to sharpen it in months. Keeps a good edge for a while.

I don't know abot kershaw's dimascus but their 14c28n (sandvik) is awesome steel, IMO so much better than 8Cr13MoV at edge retention and just as easy to sharpen. I would have already ordered the new thermite if it came in 14c28n but I have enough 8Cr13MoV blades I don't use, its also the reason I don't own a sypderco budget series knife (tho I'm really thinking about giving in and ordering a tenacious).

You don't see many [if any at all] knives that offer a choice between 14c28n and 8Cr13MoV but for me its no contest, I really like 14c28n, I don't at all care for 8Cr13MoV

Yeah I really like 14C28N. I wanted to know what the Damascus in the 4150/4380 was like compared to something like 14C28N. I'm not expecting it to be some super steel, but just because it looks cool doesn't give it a pass if it doesn't perform.

(And on Kershaws budget line I don't mine 8Cr13MoV, my little $30 Cryo has been a great little knife, and will probably be getting a Cryo, or maybe a Thermite, to keep it company. That said, it would be great if there was a 14C28N Cryo, and I would be fine paying more for it, but most people at Walmart would not).

These are pretty unique and rare (limited made and discontinued).

DoubleCross:

Wild Turkey:

The Spec Bump is also pretty unique, if you can find one of those (discontinued). The Speed Bump is a more recent variant with flat G10 scales instead of 3-D machined. It features a stud lock, where the thumb studs themselves serve as the lock. It braces against the liners when open, and you push it forward (it's on a small spring) to disengage it.

Then there's the good ol' Blur. Can't go wrong with one of those. Plenty of variations to choose from.

Then there's the recent run of damascus bladed knives from earlier this year (Skyline, Shallot, Leek, Scallion, and Chive). You might be able to find one on the secondary market for under $100.

Kershaw guy has at least the leek, scallion, and chive in DAM (both the black and silver versions of some) in stock for under $100. Not sure about the shallot, and no skylines.

Top ZT 561 $100 @ last year's factory sale, EDC until displaced by the Thermite.

Bottom Kershaw Thermite $35 delivered online, EDC now.

There are a lot to choose from it depends on what styles your dad is interested in. I would look at a Leek or a Blur and just get a special coloration or steel of one.

First off, its not really a true welded forged Damascus, its a core of VG-1 with layers of 420 over top, like a laminate. Personally, I prefer VG-1 over both steels you reference. Either of these knives would be more than suitable for an office environment.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I think I have a good idea now what I want to get for him. I want to see the knives in person though to make the final decision... finding a good store will be the next issue :/
