Best Keychain SAK?

Vic Midnite MiniChamp has been my keychain EDC SAK for about 10 years. Lost my first one and ordered two more, one's on the keychain and the other is a backup. It has the translucent red scales with ballpoint pen on one side and the shield is the on/off button for the red LED light on the other scale. Both come in really handy but if you want Alox, Roger aka Swiss Bianco, has small batches of Alox MiniChamps made from Victorinox directly. They cost a bit more but the Alox slims down the overall knife while maintaining maximum tools.

I appreciate the info. Also, what are those quick-detach hooks on your keychain? I think theyre called crab claws or something similar, but for the life of me I cant find them. Again, many thanks for the input.

My main issue is with the flimsiness of the blade. I'm definitely gonna look into the micra, I really appreciate the recommendation.

IME, flimsiness is related to lateral stress - side to side. I've found on numerous knives that side to side flimsiness is something of a race condition between the blade and the joint. And there's also the issue of the size of the handle. For example, the size of the blade on the Classic or Micra is about the size as found on many high end wood working knives. But... the handles on a wood working knife are full sized for comfort. So it's possible to put a lot more stress on the blade.

With the Classic, the frame/handle is so small that it's really, really hard to put enough force to the blade to bust either the blade or the joint. Still, I've managed to bust or loosen one up. I've found the joint on the Micra to be much tougher and it needs to be since the handle can put more pressure to the blade/joint.

With my wife, I don't worry that she'll ever push her Classic too far. I wouldn't treat the classic like your other key ring knife.

Oh cool another troll....

davidseale began another thread in General Knife Discussion and accidently put his second post here instead of there. All fixed now. :)

If you want something bigger than a Classic or Rambler, but smaller than a Cadet, you need a Victorinox Executive. It's 75mm closed and the difference in blade length is noticeable, the scissors are much larger as well. Also, check out Wenger SAKs, their smaller sized models are larger than Vic's and there are some super cool models.

Here are a couple of quick pics. Top SAK is a Victorinox Classic followed by a Wenger Pocket Tool Chest (awesome tool selection, IMHO), a Wenger Money Clip (super thin, and has a clip) and finally a Victorinox Executive. The Pocket Tool Chest and the Executive are the ones I use the most.

I find the Wengers to have the perfect balance of size and usefulness.

I'd never looked into the executive line before, thanks for the recommendation. I'll also look into some Wenger SAKs, I truly appreciate the input.

Glad to help man. The stainless steel clips are called McGizmo clips. The ones on the SAK and Spyderco are the Micro clips which are 25mm long and the smaller ones on the EDC Depot vials and USB drive are the 20mm Nano clips. Got them from Lighthound which from what I recall had the best prices I could find. Great little clips but in all honesty I've had the spring on one of the Nanos come off. I was able to reattach it and it's been fine since. IIRC CountyComm sells them too, or something similar in Ti but they're more expensive. TEC Accessories also sells something similar called the Python Clip, 28mm (Model PC-001).

Victorinox who bought Wenger several years ago announced late last year that they'll be discontinuing most if not all Wenger models that compete directly with the Vic line but apparently will continue to produce some of Wenger's niche items. I mention this only because I don't know which of Wenger's small SAKs will still be available.

Forgot to mention that I don't know if they're going to continue to sell the Wenger items as Wenger, or completely absorb them into the Victorinox line and rebrand them accordingly. I seem to recall it's the latter.
