best knife as marine graduation gift?

Don't, just don't. He's got a lot more training to go through and a personal knife will not be needed. He still needs to just blend in. A fancy knife will bring him nothing but grief at this stage of his USMC life. Maybe for Christmas. And then a nice SAK will be a good choice if you really want to get him something useful.

Benchmade's or Spydies are not generally considered fancy. I served for 21 years and I completely disagree with your post. No one is going to seriously criticize or make fun of a freakin' production folder like a BM or Spyderco of a comrade in arms. He can just say it was a gift if someone has an issue with it.

Microtech socom elite or ludt. They also have a first responder and military program.

It depends on his trade, but probably something not too heavy, with a stainless steel blade, and a decent lock would be a good choice. They'll be issued with a lot of things they don't want to carry already. A Benchmade Mini Crooked River has a classic look with a strong, functional blade. A Griptilion would be a very useful knife and you can get different scale options for it these days. If you buy it from Benchmade they'll take care of the engraving for you. Soldiers tend to have the same taste in knives as they do in camping gear: the worst (often cheap and half serrated in the case of knives). So whatever you get them will likely be a lot better than anything they are likely to trip over themselves.

If he winds-up on a S.A.W. or 240 (*or whatever belt-fed hate-sprayer they'll be using by the time he's out of Basic), a multi-tool/Leatherman will be a very convenient "Friend" in the field...and get used quite a bit, in my humble opinion.

I say go with a benchmade adamas or spyderco shaman. There bullet proof. Instead of engraving, give it as a gift with a card or something. It is a very important day but If he shows up to his unit with a trophy in his pocket for passing bootcamp he could be picked on or be the brunt of many of jokes. It really depends on his mos or job. Not trying to be demeaning or rude. I feel what you are doing is an awesome gesture. I'm coming from a place of experience. Boattale Boattale is right. This is just the beginning of his journey. Of course I could just be an idiot.

A Leatherman is the only answer. I used mine all the time for anything and everything while I was in. A blacked out Supertool 300 or blacked out Wave would be perfect. It doesn’t matter their MOS, a Leatherman is one of the most useful tools for a Marine.

I agree very useful. Just that I was issued a bunch of them for free.

I was not issued any multitool at all while I was in. I was given a small Gerber Gator lockback, but never a multitool.

You beat me to it. No knife until he gets to an actual tactical unit and finds out what they will allow him. Otherwise he will just end up having it confiscated. Also posted based on experience. Who would have thought a Puma boot knife "made for paratroopers" would be forbidden in jump school? :)

In my experience, the only knives allowed in the barracks are ones with blades less than 3” (MCAGCC 29 Palms in 2007). Anything over that will need to be “checked into the armory”, but I never knew anyone that actually did that.

Yeah, I have a lot of remarks that I think are funny locked and loaded, but I wouldn't want anyone to think me serious so, I think I will follow ol' Danny's example and say: Thank you for your service, nothing else to contribute.

Is the "Don't. Just... just don't" people idea coming from a "Hey fancy boy, what you got there???" type ruler-of-the-roost situation, being singled out, etc?

There are a multitude of ways having a personal knife in a USMC training unit can get you in trouble. Without even trying.
