What's the best blade material currently in folding knives?
What companies currently have a ZDP-189 knife?
What's the best/lowest price folding knives that has a ZDP-189 Blade?
And where can I get a good deal for knives?(like GPKnives.com)

How much better do you think the ZDP-189 is from the S30V?

Thanks!

1. debatable, but ZDP-189 is a good choice.
2. William Henry, Spyderco, Kershaw and Yuna that I know of.
3. Probably a Spydie for price, I'd take Yuna knives as the best if not William Henry.
4. cheapest place is on ebay, do a search for ZDP-189. Contact WH or Yuna directly or watch the makers for sale forums for Yuna folders.

There is no best - that's what makes the fun never stop if you don't want to stop hunting and let's you enjoy what you have if hunting is a waste of time.

Right now, only Spyderco and William Henry are using ZDP-189 in production blades and Kershaw uses ZDP-189 and SG-2 (another stainless steel with high hardness and insane wear resistance) on special-run knives. Fallkniven uses SGPS and possibly SG-2 on some of their folders, but the Spydercos and Kershaws will likely be more what you want and can afford.

Do you know where I can go to see the pros and cons of different kinds of metal blades?

What do you think the least priced ZDP-189 or SG-2 would go for? (Not including ebay)

This will give you a good start to why certain steels have certain properties and how to refer to such properties, but does not cover all steels. The A.G. Russel site has alot of info as well. Be carefull, there is no end to the can of worms you seek to open. Read through a few steel threads and you will find that even knowledgable people like to argue about such things. :P

I agree, there is no "BEST" each steel performs good for certain tasks...There are a few good steels that work for a little of everythgin, but no real proven best, you will only find people opinions here in this thread, no real proof of this is better than this because of this...know what I mean? No better, just different...

1. TOTALLY depends on what you want to use it for.
2. what they said
3. Do an ebay search for "zdp" should turn up a good number of things. Spydie endura and delica are cheapest @ ~$75 give or take, then kershaws leek and mini cyclone and spydie calypso jr @~$140 and william henry at custom prices probably $300+
4. ebay if you have patience. knifecenter, knifeworks, and new graham knives if you do not.
5. Better is hard to define without definition as to in what way. Do a search on it here on the forums. But I think this thread describes zdp in a lot of detail.

So far, the most impressive steel I've come across lately has been the H-1 used by Spyderco.
I can get an extremely sharp edge on it with remarkable ease.
And it holds that edge for a respectable amount of work.

I'm also rather impressed with the S30V blade (heat treated my Mr. Bos) on my Alaskan Guide Buck 110.

I had great success with my old 440C Benchmade Griptilians too.

I've seen ZDP Calypso Jr.s for $60 online, and I paid around $78 for my ZDP Endura, and I've seen the Delicas a few dollars cheaper than the Endura. Those are the cheapest I've seen so far in ZDP. I bought my Endura from New Graham Knives.

Best for what? What are you going to use the knife for? I am partial to S30V, BG-42, and 154CM.

I am kinda partial to S30V, but call me old fashioned my second fav and one you just cant go wrong with is 1095 high carbon.

For the things that I use a knife for, like hunting, camping and just running around the mountains, D-2 is nearly perfect. I also like the A-2 that Bark River uses.

I love 1095. I've got it in my EDC and woods knife and it's great; easy to sharpen, takes a wicked edge, holds the edge given, and is tough as you'll need. It's my personal favorite with S30V in a close second. :D

Oops, I meant Caly 3 w/ carbon fibre for more expensive...looks like the caly jr is significantly cheaper, with ebay theres always such variation anyway.

Great, given the own answer with the second question!:D

What would you say if someone has claimed 154CM way better than ZDF 2000?
