"slices" inspired this thread with his recent reference to a knife fighting movie:

Anybody have a favorite movie or scene that uses knives for dramatic effect? Fighting or otherwise?

My entry is the fight scene with Bowie knives in "The Long Riders". Not accurate, I'm sure, but memorable as a highlight of knife play in a great western. Anyone familiar with the movie know what Bowies were used?

well the knife fight I remember most was from the movie Cobra with Stallone. That knife was just so cool to me when I was young, it may have sparked my lust for knives. So to me it makes it the best.

Has to go to Steven Segal for Under Seige One and Two. Man kitchen knives as weapons that is just to much those guys did fantastic stuff with those tools and made it look so easy. If you have ever tried to do knife fighting you know just how hard it is even if it is all coriographed with rubber knives.

I just saw "The Hunted" on ppv. Starring Benicio Del toro and Tommy Lee Jones. Theres lots of knife fighting, I did some research on the knife they used:

The one in the Devil's Brigade, where they are assaulting the German held mountain that no one else had managed to capture.

This is going back a ways, but one of my favorites is James Coburn in the Magnificent 7. In the movie this cowhand challenges Coburn to a shoot out only Coburn doesn't use a gun he uses a switchblade. Somebody yells "Draw!" and the cowboy goes for his gun and fires and Coburn throws the kniffe into a post along side the cowboy. The cowboy goes, "Ya see, I won." Coburn just says, "You lost." and goes to sit down again. The cowboy says, "Let's do again and this time for real." Coburn doesn't want to, but is pushed into it. This time they do it for real, someone yells "Draw!" and Coburn wins, throwing his kniffe right into the guys chest.

Who ever said, "You don't bring a knife to a gun fight"? ;)

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know Sean Connery said it in "Untouchables". :p

I'd have to vote for the Hunted too. seemed the closest to 'real' knife fighting, though still very 'hollywood'...

Chris,

There's an extended version of the original Dune movie with Kyle McLaughlin (sp) which also has the crysknife fight with Jamis. They show it on Sci Fi now and then.

PS - Where are all the votes for West Side Story???

Magnificent 7, that was a great scene.

There were several good fights in Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford. Great movie!:)

My vote for most realistic was in the Movie "Billie the Kid the Younger days" when he was just starting out. Fight was between two women...very real.

Maybe someone can help me out---Been trying for years to recall a movie title an OLD western. Has an Indian and a Cowboy in a knife fight in a bar, wrists tied together by a pair of stockings. They were fighting over "Belle Star" (I think?) and the Indian winds up with a Bowie all the way to the bone in his thigh.

There may be no knives or too many flying around (help from wire....) but the best fight scenes always involve Jet Li and/or Donny Yen.

I haven't seen anybody fasten than them!

I think Isstaipei has it. Saving Private Ryan, bayonet fight, inglorious, personal, dirty. No technique, use what you've got. It's not how we want it, it's how it is.

I think the best knife fighting scenes (including training) are in Exposure, starring Peter Coyote. Hard to get ahold of the movie now. Coyote plays a photographer in Brasil (I THINK), has a friend killed, trains and then goes out for revenge. Careful - 'cause there's another movie called "Exposure" out there, so be sure you're going after the one Coyote stars in.

Hello Blinker.
Could it be the movie "Jesse James and the Younger Brothers". I think the cowboy was played by James Carradine.

I liked the close combat scenes in The last of the Mohicans. I like the tomahawk/knife combination:D .

I love what Rafael and Tom Kier did with the knife fighting in "The Hunted".

Here's a link to the real knife in "The Hunted"...

Hey thanks, I didnt realize that the one I posted wasnt the real deal. Beck's looks awesome.

Well--it's sort of knife/tomahawk/butt of flintlock, but I liked a couple of the battle sequences in "Last of the Mohicans." Someone else can address how realistic it was--but man, it sure was PRETTY... :)

"Kill Bill" with Uma Thurman and Vivica A Fox is supposed to have some amazing knife scenes. I'm not even sure if it has opened yet.
