What is the best knife I can get for $70? It will be an EDC, so I need a good quality steel blade, it needs to have a solid handle, and it needs to have a quality lock and a good edge. Also, make sure it has a decent sized blade (atleast 3") with either a straight or combo edge.

Any of the griptilians or mini griptilians are great choises. They have very good steel and are easy on the pocket. Mine is sharp enough to push cut tissue paper sometimes. Plus, the axis lock is supposed to be one of the strongest made and is EASILY openable and closable with one hand.

The Spyderco D’Allara drop point (3.5") and Endura 4 (3.8125") are both great knives for the money. The D’Allara being more sturdy than the E4, but also much larger (thicker). Many people like the Waved Endura for it’s quick opening method http://newgraham.com/detail.aspx?ID=5709
The Griptillian would also be a good choice.

The spyderco Byrd crossbill and a Buck 110, you can buy both and stay under 70$.

This question is reminiscent of when people post asking what the "best" blade steel is. The honest answer is that there is no "best" knife. You need to determine what attributes you want it to have, and then go from there.

You stated it will be an EDC knife and you want a good quality blade. Do you want something that is exceptionally corrosion resistant, one that is very hard with extreme edge-holding capability, one that is very tough, one that you can sharpen quite easily, etc.? There will always be some sort of compromise involved

Next you mention a solid handle. Do you want something with metal scales, reinforced plastic, G-10, wood?

What is your lock preference? There are lock-backs, frame locks and liner locks, locks such as the Ball Bearing lock or AXIS lock, and others. All should be more than sufficient for EDC usage, but some are easier to manipulate and some people like certain types more than others.

The point is that there are quite a few excellent knives that fit your initial criteria, and none of them could universally be considered the "best" out of the bunch. Personally though, if you are seeking a good, all-around folder, I would suggest looking at the Spyderco Delica or Endura.

Yes, I realize that, I was asking really what you would recommend, regardless of the specifics. If you want some specifics, here ya go:

Lock type: Lockback
Blade quality: Keeps a good edge but not too hard to sharpen
Handle: Anything but wood and plastic as long as it is tough
Blade size: 3" and up

Third time is a charm! For the money you get a CPM-S30V stainless steel blade! The Black spider web handle is pretty neat.

If FRN handles are out, then I'd probably suggest the Spyderco SS Endura, or the Byrd G-10 Cara Cara (or, even both since they'd still fit into your budget).

  • Backlock: Check
  • Blade steel: VG10. Holds an edge well and sharpens easily. Check.
  • Handle: FRN, which is not really plastic... quite. Check.
  • Blade length: 3 inches. Check.
  • Under $100. Street price is about $40, plus-or-minus. Check.
Was my first quality EDC. Great knife. Very happy with it. Opens quickly & easily. Closes and pockets the same. Nice, grippy handle. Can mount the clip for right- or left-hand, tip-up or tip-down. Hard to beat.
