Best knife for harsh military use?

Swamp Rat Howling Rat LM if you can find one. Cheaper alternative to the Busse Badger Attack. Just went back and noticed the blade length requirement, how 'bout a Swamp Rat Ratmandu? Couple on Ebay and the exchange here right now. A Ranger RD6 would also be a great choice. All these choices will handle all you can dish out

I only know one guy that's been there. He works in a local gun & knife store when his unit is not deployed. He told me that the knife he used most was his CRKT M21. Said it was more useful to him than a FB and less likely to be stolen or lost than a FB.

I am not doing service or that things, but i remember, that most folks, coming back, were considering a good tool (Wave, Swiss tool or Swiss tool Spirit) as to be the most useful thing.

Some have considered large knives or fixed blades in general as to be more disturn´bing than a good folder.

Many were fine with a SAK. But i can be more:D

Consider a tool!

I guess, a tool is the most tactical piece of metal, ever made. :D

Being a former U.S. Army Infantry Paratrooper, I can honestly recommend less expensive (sub $100) knives are probably your best bet. Maybe the Cold Steel SRK, Benchmade CSK II, Gerber Prodigy, or SOG Seal knives. These type of knives are very affordable, durable, and efficient for the type of field use that you'll encounter.

I agree with Wunderbar, go sub $100, you will not be quite as pissed if it is stolen or broken off in the back of some sheethead. Being a Vietnam-era Marine, I recommend the Ka-bar combat knife. I gave my 35 year-old knife to a buddy's son who took it to Afghanastan with the U.S. Army (and returned home safe and sound).
I replaced it with the Ka-bar D2 steel version and carry it with me hunting. I also bought a Survival Sheath from this web site and they are excellent together.
God speed and thank you for your service to our country!

+1 on RD6 from ranger knives. Super stout, and a bargain at 89.00. I honestly dont know how Justin does it. If I was still in the army and deploying, I would have my leatherman surge, Ranger RD6 in spec-ops survival sheath on my gear, Spyderco manix, and maybe a ranger knives litle bird around too.

Low $$ - Microtech Curahee

Low $$ - Horrigan Custom. He's down by Ft Bragg [(910)496-1925] He's Airborne I believe. I gave this one of mine to an Eagle scout from my troop who went to Afganistan.

Thanks for your service and don't trust your butt to some low end production knife.

Based on my Ranger RD9 I say Ranger RD6 for sure. Also I am curious if anyone can explain why military units on deployment would be banned from using certain knives?

Buy yourself any Busse, Swap Rat, or Scrap Yard knife and you will have a knife that is as close to indestructible as any knife can be! Any of these will stand up to mere military use! Go to knifetests dot com and view the destruction videos of some of these knives! I promise you will be impressed!,,VWB.

What he said.

Go to the Exchange Forum here and use Pay Pal to obtain a knife you like. Most all have pictures with them.

Busse Combat Knife is the finest hard use knife in the world, expensive too.

Swamp Rat Knife Company is a sister company of Busse Combat and their knives are about 1/2 the price of a comparable sized Busse blade. A blade that is over the top in strength as well.

And finally Scrap Yard Knife Company. It too is a sister company of Busse and Swamp Rat Knives but priced at 1/2 less than the comparable sized Swamp Rat knives.
Scrap Yard knives are over the top strong and take a razors edge. They are made from S-7 Tool Steel hardened to SR-77 by Dan Busse in a special heat treatment process that there is no need to get into now. Jackhammer bits are made from it,that's how shock resistant it is!
Safe to say any of the Busse Family of knives is the ONLY way to go for personal safety.
I would stake the lives of my entire family on Scrap Yard knives and never have a second thought about it. They are the finest hard use knives in the world for the price. Bar none.
Now get to the Exchange Forum here and track down a proper blade for your tour in Afghanistan.
God bless you for your service and may you have a safe and short tour of duty and come home to your family and friends.
Be well.

Peace.

If you can find one I would go with a Camillus/Becker BK-7
Also check out RAT cutlery & Ranger RD6. ColdSteel SRK
Along w/ the mid-size fixed blade you are asking about, I would also get a good leatherman multi-tool ( it will fit perfect in the small pouch on these large knife sheaths) Also a good backup would be RAT CUTLERY RC-3, Spyderco Manix, Buck/Strider & a good Vict. SAK (soldier model w/ alox handle)
My prayers go out for you & those already in. Be safe & God Bless

First off, since you're in the military you get 50% off the top for Kershaw and Zero Tolerance. Take this to heart and you might want to look at Zero Tolerance's 1050 (found here... http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=391 ) double-edged S30V dagger w/ blood groove and MOLLE-compatable sheath. When I go to the Sandbox soon, this is the knife I will be taking, along with a Leatherman multi-tool (Gerber's suck) and a quality folder (beater) like a CRKT M16-13M that is perfect for abusing.

I'll be taking my Random Leek with titanium handles and also my Benchmade automatic. A huge Rambo-style knife isn't really necessary for most of the work over there. Also, look at the CRKT Dragon. It's based off of Bob Kasper's design and Crawford knives makes the real custom here, http://www.crawfordknives.com/DRAGON%20KNIFE.htm

The Crawford Dragon, Zero Tolerance 1050, Leatherman, CRKT M16-13M, and Random Leek by Kershaw would be my picks to summarize.
