I am looking for the best and sharpest knife for survival situation. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

How do I become a millionaire..?

It's a big question with an even bigger answer.

Kind of a broad question....Truthfully i'd rather have a Multi-Tool than an actual knife in a survival situation, but that is just me. For you, i'd recommend a custom fixed blade, or possibly semi-custom (Bark River). The only epxerience I have with fixed blades outdoors is Fallkniven, and it performed extremely well.

Buy a Swiss Army Knife. Cut away from yourself when you use it. Spend 10 hours going all through this site before you post again. You are welcome.

I have never used a balisong before, I think I will go with that. I watched KickAss, if she can do it it will be a piece of cake

"Survival Situation", that darling word of TV pop-"reality"-crap shows about egomaniacs and thier film crews (Les Stroud aside) playing tough guy in the woods.

It is a meaningless word. Every second of every day you're in a "survival situation"; make that next breath count.

I think what you meant to ask is "what would be a good multi-purpose knife for use in the wilderness?" And even then, it is highly dependent on the specific location, time of year, and your skill level. Primitive man lived countless generations with split rocks. Tropical rain forests almost demand a machete to help keep you sane. For an urban jungle, I'd rather have a stiletto or concealable auto-opener, though a machete may still come in handy ;)

The bottom line is, there are a million high-quality blades out there; read the forums or even do a simple Google search.

You just need to find the one that is right for you, your likely situations, and your checkbook.

It also depends on what you have stored as you supplies for the upcoming situation. I for example have a very well stocked wine cellar. When TEOTWAWKI hits I am going to enjoy drinking and bartering fine wines. I favor a SAK over my condor rodan, cold steel bushman, and many spydercos as it has and they do not have the very necessary corkscrew.

As with most things the correct answer to your question is "It depends"

Hey guys, just wondering what kind of car I should buy for driving?
Was going to pick up a Lexus LFA, which I think is king, but 400,000.00 was too much. I settled for and recommend a Nissan GTR. Now back on topic...

Yesterday I carried an Emerson Karambit and a ZT 0550 at work, and I didn't die.
Therefore, they must count as good survival knives.;)

The OP is obviously new, so lets try not to scare him off :).

Like its already been said, the question is very broad, so the answers are also pretty non-specific. And instead of asking for a "survival knife" you might get more help asking for a "Camp knife". Most of the time when people ask this, they'll get some kind of fixed blade knife to fill this role.

I'm just going to throw out some very generic and loose ideas for a few price ranges to perhaps help get you started. Keep in mind that I am skipping a TON (for sure this is NOT COMPREHENSIVE), and am not the most knowledgeable guy out there. I just know how it feels to ask a non-specific question because I don't know enough to ask the question I should have asked :).

Inexpensive Category: $10-$40
Mora (generally a bit smaller, but quite sharp and easy to maintain)
Condor (Look at the Rodan, Varan, Kumunga, Bushlore, etc).

Middle of the road Category: $40-$100
KaBar (USMC, Heavy Bowie, etc)
Buck(119 is the only FB I know very well, but its a solid classic for the category)
Becker(Made by KaBar, great full tang knives that are very "beefy". Not lots of bells and whistles, but solid. Check out the BK2, BK7, and BK9)

Upper middle:$100-$150
ESEE(Beefy fixed blades, full width full length tang knives with more of the bells and whistles. ESEE 4, ESEE 5, ESEE 6, Junglas)
Scrapyard Knives(511, 711)

High End: $150-up
Swamprat(Ratmandu, Rodent 9)
Busse(any of them)
And many others...

So hopefully that might give you some direction to go and get things started in terms of your own research.

Good luck man :).

I think that's a pretty good list. I'd also add Buck, to the middle category. Nice value blades there and made in the US.

Of course :p, how could I forget something as obvious as them *facepalm*.

But its never going to be a complete list, was just trying to get some basic things down to help the OP get started.

Heck, when I first ran across this place, my idea of an awesome knife was a Gerber :).

as broad as it is, id go with for a fixed blade, any esee #, and for a folder id go with a zero tolerance 0300.
