Best Knife for Survival situation

I am looking for the best and sharpest knife for survival situation. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

The one you have on you at the time....

The knife that is at home, in the car, or anyplace else will do you no good at all in that highly unlikely situation.

Very, very true.
Those who think otherwise are deluding themselves...much like the guys I know who think they're defended because they have a shotgun at home.
Newsflash, your shotgun is at home, not here.
The same goes for the knife.
Unless I get lost while in the woods, I won't have a Junglas, or the beast of a knife that I made with me. I'll be surviving with the aid of a folding knife of a size which fits in my pocket.

The Best Survival Knife Is The One You Have With You When Your Life Depends On It...!!!

Odds are your not going to be toting around a hollow handled CRK Shadow I or a Busse NMFBM. So your more likely to be carrying a folder. I personally carry a sebenza, umnumzaan, xm-18 just to name a few. They are tough, sharp knives that will handle anything I throw at them. A good multitool such as a leatherman or victorinox swiss army knife is also a good choice as they offer more than just a cutting edge.

Ultimately, the choice is yours.

This is a trick question, Isn't it? LOL
No true "survival situation" can ever really be planned for. The best #1 survival knife of all time is the knife you have on you when you find yourself in a survival situation. I always carry a multitool with a knife blade and a 4" locking folder. If you want to go out in the woods and play survival I can tell you I do the same thing. I have at least a 1/2 dozen perfect survival knives for playing survival. You will have to do what I did, spend your hard earned money on knife after knife until you find the ones that suit you and what you need or want to do with them. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If I found myself in a survival situation, the knife I had with me might not be the knife I wish I had. However, if I had the knife of my choice on me, I'd actually have two knives- a folder and a fixed blade. One excellent folder, that would also give you a saw, would be the SAK Farmer or Hiker. I'd want one of those with me. For the fixed blade, I'd be perfectly happy with a Fallkniven F1 or the excellent Ka-Bar Mark 1 Navy knife with the Kraton handle and plastic sheath.

Victorinox alox Farmer or huntsman. Small, sheeple friendly, good for many different scenarios, and easy to sharpen.

Les Stroud did one of his first Survivorman episodes with nothing more than a Victorinox Huntsman in the Georgian swamps.

My only advice - whatever you decide to carry make sure you put the knife or tool thru it's paces in a safe environment before you get into a life / death situation with it so you truly know the limitations of the steel, handle, ergonomics, etc. Also - make sure you can proficiently sharpen it in the field.

I have a Strider SMF with S110V steel - and there is NO WAY I could field sharpen that bad boy if it went dull. It takes a LOT of effort to put an edge back on that knife. So - steel choice is as big a decision as knife type.

If your going with a balisong stick which a spyderfly. They can be pricey if you don't look for a deal but the mine is my favorite knife. came Sharpish (was previously owned before me) the thing just womt break. You can squeeze the handles all the way to gether making it stronger if you have to chop a branch. It is a king knife and gives a great deal of extenrion reach, and it has a clip and a nice feel. Oh another plus is they are fun to flip once you get used to it. So while your stuck in the woods you'll have something to do! Don't make din of me for this post or criticize me because I'm a balisong addict. Also don't think you need a 42 just for survival. The 42 is very light and it would be easy for it to fall out of you pocket and you never have it again. Well, just my .02 -Eric

The knife that you don't not have on you.

You've sold two Balisongs on the exchange, and yet you say you've never used one? Hmmmmmm. ??

The best knife for a survival situation is the one you have on you.
A plastic butter knife can be a survival knife in the right hands. I recommend the kind from McDonalds.

I carried a Vic Explorer yesterday and survived the whole day. Ate three meals and slept in a bed at night even. Ergo, the Vic Explorer is a great survival knife.

Whenever someone asks for a recommendation for a good 'survival' knife, I just assume they mean a knife suitable for general camping/outdoor utility. But then I read this:

I have never used a balisong before, I think I will go with that.

I suppose any sharpened piece of steel would be better than nothing, but a balisong is one of the last type of knives I'd think of as a 'survival' tool. I suppose therein lies the argument for arguing semantics... we're back to the whole "what is a 'survival' knife?" question, in which case the cliche answer of "whatever knife you have on you" is entirely valid. It's probably the reason why I like my SAKs so much for daily carry.

It's impossible to answer.

Without knowing where the OP is going to do this, it's a crap shoot. The Sonoran desert needs a whole different approach than the Colorado Rockies, or a bad night in Central Park NYC! It could be anything from a ask to a machete.

Carl.
