I am not advocating anything here -- you do as you see fit -- but I have to ask you: if you were to carry concealed to your student teaching gig, would anyone ever know? Do you have to go through school metal detectors to get onto the grounds or into the building? I think it would be a real tragedy if one day someone DID come into your school shooting, and you had had to leave your gun home because of the stupid law that says you can't carry to a school. Is that the way you'd want it to play out?
The school I am currently working in does have metal detector wands, although I have yet to see them actually being used. They do use them for sporting events, but I haven't seen them used in daily activities.
There are armed police officers in the school. They do not stand at the front door waiting for people to come and shoot them first, they are always on the move. I would think they would have an excellent chance of ending any violence situation before it got out of control.
I refuse to risk my livlihood carrying to school. First, getting caught would get me tossed from college and cost me my degree. Next, I would never be able to find a teaching job anywhere in the US with that on my record. Finally, I would lose my permit and right to carry.
I really doubt anyone would know, but I still don't want to take the risk. My appearal pretty much keeps me from carrying as well. I wear nylon sweat pants (no belt) as I am a physical education teacher and am in the gym all day. I will not carry in a bag or brief case, as that would not be in my immediate possession at all times.
Bottom line, when it comes to self-defense and the law, I want to follow the law. I have no desire to be a criminal or a vigilante. If I was allowed to carry to school, I would probably adjust my clothing and do so. If I knowingly and consistently break the law in order to protect myself against criminals, I am no better then the criminals I am trying to avoid.
