I look at them once in a while while waiting for the wife to shop but haven't come across one yet that I thought was worth subscribing to. They seem to favor the knives that buy the most ad space.:thumbdn:

after spending probably thousands on knife and gun magazines, i'll say, save the money for a knife.
there's more info on the web than in any mag. and it doesn't cost as much.;)
don

i honestly dont think you need them, i bought BLADE mag and tactical knives last month, all of the info was old. if you pay attention on the forums you dont need to spend your money on the mags, if i was you i would just as well upgrade my membership here.

I don't subscribe to any, but I read Tactical Knives mostly, and sometimes BLADE.

I think Tactical Knives magazine is the best one out there. I don't subscribe to it but I look forward to it coming out every second month, and I buy every issue. It's true that some of the knives covered have already been out for quite a while but the magazine nevertherless contains some interesting information.
I think the magazine suffers somewhat from having an editor ,who seems about as tactically minded as your average grandmother, and seems conflicted about how worthwhile knives really are. The latest issue has him singing the praises of an everyday axe. I think they should hire Charlie-Mike as the new editor. [ I'm kidding yes, but if you've read his posts you'll know he's unapologetic about tactical reasons for carrying a knife ]
If you're a reader, forums like this will never take the place of a magazine or a book that you can hold in your hands, read ,put down and pick up again, as the mood strikes you.

I've read Tactical Knives, Blade, Knives Illustrated and Knife World. Out of those, I will only renew my subscription to Knife World. You actually learn something. As for reviews, I prefer to read Backwoodsman. Lots of different knife articles, some authors of note are Dan Schectman (used to write for Tactical Knives) and James Ballou.

The best advice: Take the money you would spend on a knife mag and get yourself a paid membership here. It's a whole lot more bang for the buck.

In any event, I'm pretty sure both Blade and Knife World offer trial subscriptions. Check out their websites and see for yourself whether they float your boat.

I like Tactical knives for the photos. I'll see knives in there I'll never see in retail shops. Good ol' fashion knife porn.

I usually buy Tactical Knives and Blade. I prefer the former. While it is true that I learn about new stuff well in advance online, I don't have a computer I can read while I'm sitting on the shi++er!!!!!:D

I will spend a couple hours on Sunday afternoon reading the 3 main knife mags at Barnes & Nobles while nursing a Starbucks coffee. My wife brings a book and I read free mags! I do however subscribe to knifeworld because it's cheap and has some great history. I just can't bring myself to buy mags that feature way too many $2000 customs when I personally am just not going to ever own.

ixna on the magazine subscriptions. They don't send them in plastic sleeves so by the time you get them, every mail-handler from the magazine's mail room to your hands will have read your magazine and probably ripped it to shreds while doing so.

OMG, I never though about the fact that someone else has been reading my mags for the past 30 years:eek:

Just kidding man:p But I have been getting magazines pretty regular for the past 30 years and can only think of a few that had damage at all. I do have a great little rural PO, so that and luck may have alot to do with it.

Nah, I'm right in the middle of a city of two-and-a-half million, and I don't have a problem either. Maybe it's just him.

I had real problems with Blade magazine on that.

They used to ship them in an envelope, but stopped.
After that they were stolen in the post system much more often, came shredded, fingerprinted and pasted with a label on the FRONT cover that I can't get off without damaging the photo.

They won't put the shipping labels on the back because that's paid advertising.
They don't care about destroying that front cover because you have already committed to buying the magazine and don't need the cover photo to entice you.

I can't buy them easily here in Canadian bookstores (chapters, coles...)because all the chain bookstores in the country are controlled by one family.
You can't get a knife or gun magazine at all ("a no weapons policy")
but there are half a dozen pot magazines (illegal here) and no end of holocaust history books with hundreds of photos of rotting corpses in mass graves

I found that the forums are a better source of:

-interactive info from knowledgeable sources-I can ask a question and get good answers.

I can get a recommended book list from a reliable source and read those whole books rather than short magazine articles snippets of questionable info.

Photos - I can see the pics of all the makers i am interested in and not those chosen by the editorial staff.

WIP threads - pics of the final product are fine, but what i really want is to know how things are done and how they work
Bruce Bump has an honourable mention in this regard.

I read Tactical Knives. I have almost every issue since 2003. It is the most well-rounded of the knife magazines, and contains more real-world information, for me. I don't care that the knives reviewed are older, but during the reviews I find little extra snippets of worthwhile information. I don't care much for the articles on blade steels, but can see their value for makers, and enthusiasts. The Survival, and Street Smarts, columns are pretty good. One of my main gripes with Tactical Knives are the pictures of the knives. I would love to see photos of the back of the knife. They always describe the pocket clips on folders, but rarely show them. Yet there are high quality photos of the knife fronts. Since half of the reviews are stilted toward camping/bush-craft functions of the knives; they should probably change the name of the magazine. My favorite line is that it only ever takes 30 seconds to sharpen a knife in all of the Tactical Knives magazine reviews. "30 seconds on my diamond hone, and it is back to popping hair off of my arm."

Blade, and Knife, magazines spend far too much space on art knives. Why spend money on a knife to stare at, when I could buy one to use for much less money. The few times I have picked either of them up; they spent the bulk of the content on fancy art knives made of exotic materials. I could not care less about a split-bladed knife with curved spikes, and pearl in-lays, made from pattern welded Damascus steel. Don't let that art knife rust either. The "tactical" reviews are too generalized.

Well crap...those addy stickers on the Front never bothered me untill I just read that 12345678910:grumpy:
All those years, and I never knew the covers were art:o
