Best knife new or used under $500

I know every one is gonna cringe but either one will get used as a edc and may be needed to cut anything from wires to some minor prying nothing the 0350 hasn't held up to.

Mr. Magnum,

I wish you the best of luck in deciding what you will buy. While we are discussing this, would you mind giving us some "real-world" knife usage examples of what you, a firefighter and an EMT have come across in your daily travels? We love stories.

Stories I may have a few most of the times I use it for normal things like cutting seat belts, cutting back material on seat cushions to get to the frame with the jaws of life but my most memorable time I used my knife was to make a tourniquet out of my leather belt we had a dot worker behind his truck and a driver not paying attention hit him amputated his right leg and I used my kershaw leek that day off was off duty acting as a good samaratine and had to make a hole for the tourniquet to stay tight.

You already mentioned you want a Sebenza. If you weren't able to get a hinderer at the First Responder price, there would be no question in my mind that you are heading in the right direction with CRK. However, since you can get the XM-18 at the "direct from Rick" price, I would say do that! Try it out. If it doesn't suit you, sell it here or trade it for a CRK+Cash:) I only have two modern folders that I carry, and I can't pick which one I like better...

Lord help you if you ever get your hands on a Laconico folder, MRaymond. But that's a topic for another conversation. On the other hand, the OP did ask if he was overlooking anything. So perhaps a full custom actually IS a topic for this conversation. :)

This much I can tell you. The next time I have $500 or so to spend on a folder, I'm going to buy me another Laconico.

Ray's work is absolutely top drawer. Problem is trying to snag one of his knives when they come up for sale. They don't last very long. Having said that, I'm still going to stick with my original recommendation. Anyone who can buy a Hinderer XM-18 at factory pricing would be foolish not to do so. I'd buy one even if I weren't into knives. The investment value alone is worth it. Seriously, go look at what XM-18s are selling for on the Exchange and you'll see what I'm talking about.

If it were me, I'd purchase a Hinderer XM-18 from the factory, sell it, use the profit from the sale to buy a Spyderco Southard, and pocket what's left. Or to put it another way, I'd suggest you let somebody else buy you a Southard and hand you some cash. You're worth it! And of course, the other party will walk away with a Hinderer, so he'll be happy. Talk about your win-win situation . . . :)
