I'm using Hanwei Sword oil, but I was wondering what you folks like to use on your knives.

I use a shop rag that has a mixture of whatever oils I used that came off from wiping my hands and tools, guns etc. It's got Hoppe's, 10-30 wt, WD-40, 3 in 1 you name it. Probably a bit of kerosene too.

Works great.

Hatchetjack's approach is perfect! If you don't have a similar shop rag, any old oil will do. Knives don't need oil that has high heat or friction properties. It just needs a bit of lubricity and protection from corrosion. Almost any oil will do that.

Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

For pharmaceutical purposes, heavy mineral oil is recommended over light mineral oil, as it is believed to have a lesser tendency to be absorbed in the gut or aspirated after oral administration.

Looks like the difference between heavy and light is the specific gravity and viscosity. For knife purposes I would say go with whatever is cheap. I'm guessing maybe the heavy stuff would coat a little thicker though.

I use plain old SINGER oil on my knives and guns.

Never tried an oil specifically for knives but I hear TUF GLIDE is good

I've found that Marine Tuf Glide gives the best corrosion resistance of everything I've used -

which includes Militec, mineral oil, FP-10, BreakFree CLP, regular Tuf Cloth, liquid Tuf Glide, and some others which I don't recall at the moment.

But FP-10 is the best pivot lube IMO.

mineral oil because it is 1. cheap- byproduct of gasoline making, 2. food safe- you can drink it and all of my knives end up cutting into an apple once and a while, 3. Handy for cutting boards and other uses.

I use Tri-Flow which contains teflon. If I take the knife apart for cleaning etc. I put a small amount of Super Lube w/ teflon on the pivit area and any detent.
Both work well for me. We all have our favorites. Just don't use too much.

Am I too anal?:confused: I like petroleum stuff on my stones. Next I clean with Dowfoam. Then I wipe with about 40% IPA, and oil with olive oil. I do this because a number of the knives I sharpen go into kitchen drawers and blocks.

Mineral oil, it's non-toxic and very stable. I just rub it in with a cotton cloth, to leave a fine layer.
