best knife to cut an apple

You can't go wrong with a Victorinox SAK. I carry a Pocket Pal everywhere. And like Hoodoo said, the Opinel excels at this kind of "work".

Hoodoo, I agree, the blade on my favorite Opinel is black but it is still a great cheese cutter! I've even opened a couple cans of smoked oysters with it while camping. My only complaint is that if you get them wet, the handle swells a bit. Just makes them harder to open. They also cut apples well.

Bon appetite!

There is only one folder made specifically for this. An Opinel. Yes, it's carbon.
I agree. It's good for the job and isn't looking like it's out of it's place in an office more than an SAK is.
But there are some stainless models. (Not that I own one.)

May be its just me but i never cut anything I'm gonna eat with my good knives. Not that they won't do the job, but because they're usually coated with Tuff-cloth or some stinky oils and i don't think these stuff will do your digestion any good.

I have a cheapo $5 kitchen knife i keep in the drawer for cutting fruit, cake, etc in the office.

I vote for a stainless opinel or a Laguiole (french folder). Both are stainless and relatively thin so easy to peel fruit with.

Most high quality american production knives have 3 - 5 mm thick blades, and peeling an apple with that sux.

My Wife insists that an opinel is the best apple peeler she has ever had, but you do need the stainless one.

Why would you buy a stainless Opinel when you can get them in carbon for the same price?

Use a plastic knife and throw it away!!!
This should have been the frist answer!!

Either my stainless opinel (the steel may not be superior, but the edge geometry's amazing) so it cuts like harsh words, or my Pradel Brossard Laguiole, which is a rather goodlooking knife, though it does not cut so well due to an insufficient blade kick. the blade dulls every time it's closed, so I leave it open at every opportunity. Looks great, polished brass and buffalo horn, though.

I just had a bosc pair for dinner. For some reason, a freashly honed chisel grind made a mess of the fleshy rind.--OKG

I'll loan you my "Spork knife"....the one that came in my field mess kit. if it works, you be the MAN!!!!

My choice is a SAK pocket-pal.
The apples here are not that large.
In case I've my starmate at my side.
To clean it I'll take ballistol.

Opinels are good, but you don't want to cut fruit with a carbon steel blade. Yuck! It causes a gross, metallic taste. That's why they used to use silver knives for fruit before stainless steel was invented.

If you're a real knife afficionado and you eat a lot of apples at work, I'd get an antique silver fruit knife! Eat your apple with class!

Hoodoo, stainless over carbon ? Well you see what Cerulean says , My wife agrees . She also reckons silver fruit knives are just a tad too dainty. The lady likes a good edge and a clean apple taste.

Some pople say that the only stupid question is the one that is not asked. Well Gary, you just proved that wrong.

Just stick the apple in your mouth and bite. This reminds me of the "Best knife to spread peanut butter" thread. Hey Gary777, don't be so quick with the "post topic" button.
