Best knife under $20

Fixed Blade
Mora 510 about $12

Folder
Kabar Dozier Folding Hunter, cheapest I found was $19.64

Svord peasant, I've EDCed one for the past couple of days, brutally simplistic and very rugged, plus the edge is a breeze to sharpen and it's really fun to just whip out and play with. Plus you don't have to worry about a cheap knife's cheap lock, since the Peasant is a slipjoint your hand is the lock. It also is very comfortable.

Gerber L.S.T is a great beater knife for around $15 to $17

I'd probably get the Kabar Dozier Hunter model (folder) with runs about $20. It is a pretty good knife, especially for the money.

My Moras all cost more than $20 US. But they are pretty good general use fixed blades if you like a light knife.

Rough Rider and Colt knives are a good value for the money.

Do you know where I could get one with wood scales instead of polypropylene?

Definitely Mora.

I have been using a Mora no 1 for many years. Cost me less than $20 shipped and is a great knife.

Takes a great edge, and sharpens up easily. Its not going to baton through 6" dry knotty logs, or cut your way out of an airplane, but for slicing things in the woods it can't be beat. Rope, fish and game, food prep, and whittling wood are all very easy with the thin edge geometry of a Mora.

Yes, go to Baryonyx Knives LLC, they are a sponsored vendor here and have a good selection of Svord, as well as about 30 other companies that you may not have heard of but all make very good knives at sometimes ridiculously cheap prices. MAM, Opinel, Case, Svord, Aitor, Nagao, etc. All of them have folders under or close to $20.

I agree with the Svord Mini here. Great knife at an unbeatable price. I also got mine from Baryonyx. Went with the polypropylene, they fill the hand nicely and seem bulletproof.

Are there any one handed opening ones out there?

Mora ! It’s always open ! :p

And yes I am looking for that something I can beat up and use

Definitely Mora!

I just checked my database, and folders I bought for less than $20 that I like are the Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter and the Kershaw Chill.

EDC'd a Gerber LST for many years. Thank you Vinifera for reminding me about it.

I just picked up a discontinued Buck Stockman 371 (Chinese) for less than $10. Just got it a couple of days ago, so I haven't really had time to put it though some use and abuse.

Kershaw Chill is a good user. I took mine apart and put a satin finish on the blade.

I use my knives for camping /edc

It turns out that my favorite camping/hiking knife happens to cost right at $20 USD. Check out the AG Russell Hunters Scalpel. AUS-10 steel, locking sheath with one-hand thumb release, lightweight, and now in orange. I don't think there's a better hiking tool on the market for the price. And AG ships to Canada.

Here's a photo showing the different styles. From top to bottom 1) the older version with AUS8; 2) the new version; 3) the new version in orange.

The Mora Companion just can not be beat at that price level...plus it's made in the USA. Buck, Gerber and Kershaw are now having a LOT of their knives manufactured in China....lousy steel, lousy quality control. Be careful when you buy.

Moras are made in Sweden.

They're the best option under $20 for a fixed blade that I know of. Mine cost me $13 including shipping, and I see plenty available under $20 right now (companion, robust, pro s, pro c, 510, 511, craftline, etc ).

For a folder under $20 that you can abuse, the svörd peasant with the poly handles is excellent. I use mine regularly. Ita basically a short handles fixed blade with a folding handle extension (its called a friction folder). Opinels are great as well, but seem a bit less... Hardy (by no means weak at all though).

For more normal locking folders, the kabar dozier folder is great.

Good luck finding something that works for you :).

Really?

Shucks! And all this time I thought I was buying a knife with Scandinavian steel and a blade history older than the USA when I bought a knife made in Mora.

Oh, well. So much for that.

I'd be quite disappointed to learn that Mora knives were made in the USA, when all this time I've been paying for and expecting a Swedish product made with Swedish materials and of Swedish quality.
:p

If you're looking for a folder, you can get a CRKT Drifter at right around $20, as well as a Byrd Cara Cara or Meadowlark, depending on your size preferences. You could also take a look at Sanrenmu, Enlan, and Ganzo's offerings; they do OEM work for some US companies, and are pretty solid offerings for sub-$20 knives.
