Hello all,

I currently own just one knife - a Spyderco Civilian, which was given to me as a gift. I am not a huge knife enthusiast, but I do enjoy knives, and like to buy quality things in general, which is why I am asking about knives here. :)

So, I have no real criteteria, other than the knife must be a folder. I'd like to be able to flick the knife open with my wrist, as I can't really do that with my Spyderco. I'd also like the knife to be of good size - nothing "mini" or small.. :)

Thanks!

EDIT: I also have a SOG Multitool, which is absolutely fantastic, so I was thinking of getting a SOG Vision, but I kind of want to diversify my small collection, especially if there is a "better" knife out there for the money.

you might want to take a look at some Benchmade folders with the AXIS lock or a SOG folder with the spring assisted opening. Both can be opened quickly and with minimal effort.

Do you have a specific task or tasks in mind?
For $200, you could get a pretty nice collection of mid and lower priced knives.

It would be mostly for a visual love for the knife.. I don't do much actual work with my Spyderco - it stays in my pocket, is a nice topic for conversation, and it looks great. Looking for something similar, except different visually.

Hmm.. can you name some examples?

Maybe a waved Emerson for that cool factor, plus I think most of them fit nicely into your range.

I quite like the Benchmades, especially the axis lock models, so I'd take a look at those and find one you like in the $100-150 range, there are quite a few to choose from.

Buy yourself a couple of good Victorinox Swiss Army Knives, a Spyderco Paramilitary, and then take yourself out for a $30 dinner :D

3 quality knives and a great dinner for under $200? Can't beat it. :)

I'll have to change this to 'best knives' under $200.

The BenchMade 420 Resistor is one great knife. Sits low in the pocket due to the great low rider pocket clip it comes with and is smooth as silk to open, plenty strong and the right size for most places for EDC.

Next I'd give my vote to the Spyderco ATR. Another great great knife that is very smooth and rock solid in performance and blade steel.

Next I'd say look seriously at the Buck/Strider 880. Overbuilt and not bad for the money at all unless you don't like liner locks. The blade on this puppy is .180 thick. Liners are .065. Its beefy.

Next I'd have to vote for the Spyderco Stretch as one of the best all around lock backs available but the Manix, the 80 mm Manix, and the Chinook are also great lock backs.

If the size of each of the above knives is an issue and you just want a good 50 state legal everyday carry knife that fits in a general everyday lifestyle and performs well. Look no further than the David Boye folder. A perfect lock back everyday carry knife IMO.

It features: A strong lock, adjustable pivot, capable of being used in self defense and/or survival if necessary, great for food prep and water sports because it is absolutely immune to salts, oils, and things that would rust and ruin other knives. A one hand opener, with tip up carry and perhaps the easiest sharpening blade in existence in the unique dendritic cobalt alloy steel exclusive to David. It is also a great cutter and edge keeper. One of my all time faves and carried quite often, especially in the summer months when I bike ride and work in the yard a lot sweating all over the place. This knife is truly maintainance free. Clean if off in any nearby puddle and shake it dry and go on your way. Rust is not a worry with one of these great little folders.

Check out the Spyker, Spyderco Kershaw collaboration knives. Slick knife and you should be able to get one for well under $200.

Remember, the Civillian is a self defense only knife, so get you self a BM or another Spydie for utility =]

You may love or hate this suggestion but the Kershaw Rainbow Leek is something a little different. Quality is excellent even if the steel is not, although this shouldn't matter for light utility.Well within budget too.
Check out the Spyderco and Benchmade ranges, very hard to get it wrong with these guys. A nice Laguiole is another consideration.

Bump.. keep em coming!

Leaning towards the Skirmish..
The Skirmish really seems to fit that "same but different" criteria as well as the "visually appealing" criteria and the "conversation piece" criteria and it is certainly no mini. Also it is probably one of the finer knives available under $200.

Have you decided what knife you are going to get yet? There have been a lot of great suggestions!! I am curious! Please keep us posted!
