For the money I simply would not settle for less than a premium steel for the blade. For half the money you put out there you can certainly have a great knife with great steel and superb handling charactersistics. One of the best all around deals available right now is the $65 plus shipping Spyderco Calypso Jr. in ZDP189 steel. (If you can still find one) Great knife and great super steel for the blade also.

One of the easiest flick open knives I have is my Buck Tarani 882. This is a great knife also IMO but it needed tweaked to sit well with my pocket. I wrote a review on it here if you want to see it. You can find explanation of my tweak job there.

All this talk about the Spyderco Calypso Jr. with the ZDP190 steel, I just broke down and bought one!!

After careful consideration, I believe I will go with the Buck/Mayo TNT. I will sleep on it, and if I still want it in the morning, I will order it from www.bestknives.com - they seem to have the best price of $165.

Thanks, all.

Hi there,
It sounds like you already have your mind made up, but if not, why not consider something like a CRKT M-series knife. They come in a number of sizes, blade configurations , handles and prices. I have a small CF m16 tanto blade that has served very well. I have used it at work, mountaineering, sea paddling , adventure racing and everything else I do with no complaints. This little guy has cut everything from climbing rope to seatbelts, double-jacketed fire hose to the rubber trim around car windows and has always come back to solid sharpness. I can only imagine what the larger models would do. You would quite a bit of money as well. Good luck.

I second the David Boye folder- got one a year ago for my birthday and I carry it each and every day at work- I feel naked without it and the damascus like patterns on the blade up its neat factor

Microtech Amphibian is a quite good knife and just under 200$. Available as auto or manual - you choose.
