Best knife under 200

Check what laws in your state are specific to school grounds. I live in CA and I was surprised to find that in my lovely south bay area there is a 3 inch limit for locking folders, otherwise in the area a 4 inch is fine, or bigger.. So I carry a sage 2 and keep a case stockman CV in my pocket as well, it doesn't raise eyebrows, and between 'em, I'm covered. GEC slipjoints are next on my list.. enjoy college!

Some private schools even specify "no weapons," so you might have him look at the Student Handbook. A nice slipjoint usually won't raise eyebrows though.

how about something in M390, you can get a BM Siebert 755 or a 581 Barrage for under 200. You cant beat M390

What kind of Emerson do you guys recommend? Sorry for all these questions. This purchase just
means a lot to me. Thanks!

The best folder I own under 200 is the Spyderco Caly 3 with carbon fiber scales and laminated ZDP-189 blade. Even cheaper is the mini griptilian.

My personal favourite knife for under $200 is my Spyderco Para-military 2. Runs about $107 from where I buy most of my knives. I carry mine every single day unless I want to carry something else for some reason, which does happen on rare occasion.

Just wondering, is it possible to get a used small sebebza?

I picked up a user sebenza for $230. But do you want to gift a used up knife?
I suggest a slip joint like the scagel fruitport or a fontenille pataud laguiole some he already has a perfect tactical EDC knife.

I recently bought a customized Benchmade mini-griptilian from their website for my son. Got the colors I wanted and had his name laser marked on the blade. He was thrilled.

I think I would get him a Benchmade 940 and also get him an A G Russell Sodbuster like the Cowboy or Rancher. Good Luck! Kevin :D

get him a nice leatherman and a spyderco military. i reccomend the wave tool because i have the most time carrying that particlaur tool of all of my multi tools. it also has a very handy bottle opener for jones soda's and root beer ;)

one of these two :D

I'm a personal fan of the benchmade 746 mini onslaught. I like it way more than I thought I would. Feels better in my hand than a para 2. Yup I said it haha.

Given he has a couple modern folders I'd also suggest a nice traditional not knowing particulars about legalities. If you are deciding between the 550 & 940 I guess you have to decide if He'd like an extremely light 3"+ blade or a beefy ZT weighing twice that of the Benchmade.

"Guns and Weapons Policy

Any type of gun including paintball guns, airsoft guns, pellet guns, etc; bows and arrows, tasers, and other weapons are prohibited in residence halls. Knives are generally prohibited in the residence halls except for kitchen utensils (such as butter knives and bread knives). Knives designed primarily for purposes other than kitchen use (such as switchblades and hunting knives) are prohibited from all buildings. A student is not permitted to carry a knife on campus for purposes of self-protection. A student may possess a small knife if necessary to serve a legitimate educational purpose. For example, an Art student enrolled in a course which requires students to use a knife to complete Art assignments may use a knife specially designed for Art projects for classroom assignments. Any device that has the appearance and/or function of a serviceable weapon or is being used in a manner of a real weapon is also prohibited in residence halls. Possession of a weapon or knife is a serious offense that may result in immediate eviction from the halls."

That only pertains to the residence halls, though. I didn't find/am too lazy to look at the rules for the rest of the campus.

I carried a pocketknife every day to school, and being in the geology department, it was requested to carry one. Sheeple or not, it wouldnt be smart to be flashing around a knife that could be perceived as "scary" in Iowa City. Iowa City is much different than the rest of the state...

Id suggest a nice slip joint.

I really like the emerson mini a100, its strong, very comfortable and great blade shape. also as far as emerson goes the cqc 7 is a classic, you cant go wrong with either

Well, he's going to University of Iowa. And he's already got a Wave and a Para. The ZT series looks good, but it might freak out sheeple. Any suggestions for more sheeple friendly locking knives?i

My suggestion is.....

The hell with the sheeple! :D

So, between ZT 550 and BM 940, which would be better?

Depends if you want a tank or a gentleman's knife. I personally thought even the para2 was too big for me to EDC, simply because it took up enough pocket space to where I couldn't put anything else in that pocket comfortably...same goes for the zt 0550. Would I use the 943 for cutting wood or making myself toothpicks out of trees? No. But its slim, has a nice blade, and a small enough profile to the point where I carry it everywhere...the gym, classes, play catch, etc. The ZT is much more robust of a knife, but its twice the weight. There are pros and cons to every knife. Different purposes for both...figure out which suits you best.

Problem with that is, folding knives are, as suggested above, disallowed at the very least in the dorms, which, as a practical rule at most schools, is the general policy on the whole campus. Would be a real shame if your son got expelled for carrying his present around. It's rare, but it does happen.
