What would you say are the best knives, fixed or folding. for under $30?
I would have to say
Moras
Opinels
Spyderco Byrds
Tramontinas
The Ag Russell woodswalker.
CS Bushman
Any SAK

I am looking to expand my knife collection but I don't wantto spend a lot of money. What knives do you guys like for under 30 bucks?

I agree 100% with the Mora. My #780 is a great cutter.

I have been hearing a lot of good things about the woodswalker lately too.

Kershaw Storm and Needs Work seem to start at about $30. Good steel, USA made knives.

Don't leave out the Douk-Douk, and the Okapi.

Also the Case yellow handle sodbuster in CV steel. Very tough working knife.

All good choices, IMHO. Depends on what your looking for. In a lock-back, I've been impressed with the Byrd's I've handled, though I have yet to buy one. The Kershaw Storm II looks like it would be a nice one too, with the 13C26 Sandvic blade. Of course, a vic SAK offers more tools and whatnot, but with a slightly less stout blade. I got lucky and picked up a becker necker for under $30, and I really like it. happy I went with that instead of the mora craftsman.

Same here, it's a great knife. I also really like Frosts Moras, the CS Bushman (truly a lot of knife for the $$) and various Bucks. I don't own any of the others mentioned, but they're highly spoken of by smart folks.

I would add the Case Sodbuster and Sodbuster Jr. in yellw delrin with CV steel blades. Great utility/work knives with great steel, light weight and very ergonomic.

Lots of Scandanavial knives are under $30 - Frosts, Erikkson, MOS, EKA, and Ahti.

You listed the Woodswalker already; the Hunter's Scalpel is the same price and a great little knife. The Bird and Trout is another good one, priced at $30. For $5 more, the FeatherLite is an incredible bargain.

When shopping in that price range, always keep an eagle eye out for discontinued, closeouts, and "warehouse finds". I actually scored an Ek Bowie and a Camillus CUDA CQB for $30 each.

Don't overlook vintage knives. Lots of USA-made Schrade Old Timers sell for $30 or less. Bruckmann knives from Germany are usually under $30 in mint condition. And I have a couple of older Giesen Forsthoff pocketknives that are nice and were very inexpensive.

Common bayonets are often under $30, if you're interested in military items.

Happy shopping,
-Bob

The Kershaw Vapor at $19.99 is a surprisingly good folder for the money, and cheap enough to treat badly if you must.

I go to stores and look for when they are changing stock, I have picked up buck, case, kershaw and a ton of scrades for less than half retail this way

Buck 110's are usually $29 everyday at Wal-Mart, and Dick's has run them for $19 (after rebate) the past couple autumns around the begining of hunting season.

I also have a nice Ontario Spec-101 that I paid $12.50 delivered for (regularly $25+PP) that's a great knife despite being a Chinese import.

Jackknife already mentioned the Douk-Douk and the Okapi.
LBG added the Sodbusters to the list.
Another one not to forget would be the Mercator.
And if you're willing to spend an itsy-bitsy more than $30 (say $35-45), I can very warmly recommend any and all Loewenmesser. Some of the best knives I've ever had and used.

There are many good qualitu butcher type knives out there- Hickory Forge for example. Cheap, sharp, and easily replaceable in most hardware stores.
