I was watching Anthony Bourdain's "The Layover" in Toronto. He visited a knife shop, they mainly had awesome kitchen cutlery(drool worthy). They had a small selection of Rockstead fixed blades(also drool worthy). The proprietors made the statement they are the best in the world!?! Best in the world? Huge claim, I know their expensive and beautiful. Huge money spent on development and exacting mfg. but are they the best in the world fixed blades? I have never even seen one in person. Does anyone own a real fixed rockstead and Busse(and kin, which I consider the best) or custom?

Anyone or anything claiming "Best" is either a fanboy, or after your money.

At most, the word "Best" is only a comparison based on conditions, specific application and precise moment in time.

The second is what I'm asking. It is a relative comparison, but still superior to everyone else.

We fill-in the "best" in our minds based on what we like & dislike. Most of this is based on aesthetics and brand awareness.

I own a lot of custom knives (probably over 100, never inventoried them all), including fully commissioned knives, including Japanese cutlery and they are all great. Can't really pick any "best" as they all really do pretty-much the same thing. Usually, a good knife is over-engineered to perform at better than anyone's skillset. If I ever had to walk out the door, I would pick & carry any of my knives without doubt or worry.

Yes, some knives are better designed to survive abuse, but that really isn't what a skilled knife-user really does with their blades.

The funnest part of knife ownership is knowing you own & use "XYZ" knife, made by "ABC" knife-maker.

I wouldn't say anyone's is superior to all other's. Seems to be very good knives though.

I have seen their rep chop alot of Bamboo with one of their folders at Blade, and then slice paper. Didn't make me want to buy one though, as I thought they were over priced.

Best? Not in my book. Here's why:
Horrifically expensive.
Liner locks, yuck.
A goofy style that I don't find attractive.

People who do like them can probably list just as many reasons why they are the best. :)

Very well put.

This is ridiculous. Everybody knows that the best knives on the planet are manufactured from Unobtanium and made in small batches by Oompa Loompas under the Wonky Willa trademark. Lord knows they're expensive, but I can chop through a MOAB with two clean strikes from my WW pen knife. :D

Man, there are some must-haves knives! YOU... must figure that out.
Have fun.

I would say a custom is the best. Not because they are built any better but simply because you can have a knife made exactly how you want it and made out of what you want.

I would have a rough time deciding which knife in my pocket is the best.

Best for who?

Your knife is "best" for me?

I figured the best knives would be made from Rosta-Frei Steel... :D

I put my money on Chef Tony's Miracle Blades. "It slices, dices, chops and is the last piece of kitchen ware you'll ever buy".

Those rockstead fixed blades have some kind of steel I've never heard of others have zdp-189 ran really really hard. even their other steels are ran in the mid 60's in rc so they might be ok, but they would probably chip out like crazy IMO, especially if you tried to do things which them that people do with their busses or bussekins. Also the owns I just looked out are crazy crazy expensive like 1,200 to 2,400 euros dunno what that equals in us dollars but thats crazy expensive. converts to $1,600.00 USD and $3,200.00 USD
