Just wondering what everyone thinks are the best knives you can get for under $20. Maybe categorize by folders and fixed blades. I already know about Opinels and Moras.

If u already know about Opinels and Moras, then u almost know it all....
The ones that I would add are SAK's (many models are under 20 usd) and the Ka Bar Dozier folder.

I have a couple of knifes frome these brand's Opinel, Mora, Victorinox and Byrd. Thes have affordable high quality knifes.

folder: Case Sodbuster or Sodbuster Jr.

fixed: anything by Imacasa really, but specifically a 14" Pata de Cuche machete.

Especially Enlan EL01. 16$ shipped, 4" blade, flipper, 4mm blade thickness, max. handle to blade ratio, thick & solid liner lock.

I have been carrying a Bucklite since 1978. Mine takes and holds an edge as well as any other knife I have owned. I have no idea if the 2011 version is as good as my 34-year old version, but its only $17 from knifecenter.com.

I've heard very positive feedback on some Chinese manufacturers: Bee, Enlan, Sanrenmu, Rough Rider, and maybe Navy. Lots of different models to choose from. Several other good options have already been mentioned: CRKT Drifter, Ka-Bar Dozier, Kershaw Chill, Kershaw Hawk, anything SAK, Mercator 'Black Cat' K55, Douk Douk, Sodbusters...

Good Luck! :)

Ontario's Old Hickory, the butcher knives are tough, they can take a beating. Soft HT, so they don't hold the edge too long, nor do they come with an edge. Convexed, and they do cut.

Svord Peasant folders can be had in that range.

A couple local brick and mortars have Japanese Higo knives starting at about $10. Crude, simple, fantastic knives.

Cold Steel Kudu is a very good cheap locking folder.

The new ones are very good as well. Buck Paklites and Bucklite fixed blades are also very good.

Also the small Buck Vantage is right at $20.

The best part is that unlike any of the other suggestions they are made in the USA!

If you have a dremel tool & modify it, IMHO the OKC 12" machete is hard to beat for $22, for a large fixed blade. My mods include: Bowie style tip-cut D-handle off-added a 2 finger choil-added 3.5" of jimping-added a fire steel spot between handle & jimping.

If you mess it up, so what, it was only $22.
