Best Knives Under 25$?

Opinels are fantastic-I have one or 2, both in INOX, and I can't complain. I love my SAKs, too. I greatly enjoy my new mora, but It's a little much to carry around, unless I'm gardening, or at my parents' ranch. You can get at least 2, if not all 3 for $25.

I would choose the Kershaw Storm. The Sandvic steel is very good somewhat better than 440C in edge holding. Plus it is a framelock! Just my opinion. thanks.

I handled one at walmart and for the price (18$) it seemed to be pretty nice.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Demo Knife. (A beefed-up, basic version of a SAK. I wish it came with a saw blade. But the can-opener is one of the best one's I've ever used). You can easily find one at an Army & Navy surplus store for just under $25. Here's an article about it. ==> http://www.donrearic.com/demoknife1.htm

Some folks don't consider it to be a knife, but there's also the Leatherman Micra. Very practical, small folding scissors + a few other useful tools. (The tiny knife-blade isn't anything special, but it'll get the job done for light, cutting chores). Shop around a bit, you can usually find one for just under $25 as well.

A lot of key-chain sized knives can be found for under $25, and they do come in handy. (The best part is, unless you're dealing with a cop who is a total jerk, you don't have to worry about your key-chain sized knife being labeled as an illegal weapon)..... Some examples would include the Starling from Spyderco's Byrd line, the Spyderco Ladybug and Buck's MiniBuck.

They have micras where I work for 20$. I'd get 10% off too, making it 18.

I like the basic army style saks except I too would want a saw on mine. The micra would be nice ot have for scissors, which are useful for pot smokers.

+1 vote for the mini-pika. even a regular sized pika would not be obtrusive in the pocket. it rides so low that it looks like a pen, and you really forget that it is there untill you need to use it. ive no complaints about the steel or ease of sharpening either.. good stuff.

best 20$ ive spent in a long time.

Honestly, the biggest reason why I like the Leatherman Micra is because of where I live. There's a certain brand of snack foods that I really like. But the bags are the ones that don't have a crinkle saying, "tear here." I remember being on the subway platform, looking like an idiot; as I tried to tear open the bag. Not the sort of place to pull out even a small pocket-knife. Considering all the hoplophobes around you would freak out. Hell, they might even freak out at the sight of a Spyderco ladybug! But not at the sight of a pair of "folding scissors." ;)

I wish I had a Micra with me, that day. But luckily, a woman who was carrying a pair of safety scissors in her purse was nice enough to open the bag for me. I guess she felt sorry for the fact that I was fighting a bag of unsalted peanuts..... and losing!:(

BTW, don't take this the wrong way; I'm not a cop so I really don't care if you smoke pot. Honestly, I'm just interested in your views on knives.

for a tad more you could get the becker necker which would blow most of the other knives out of the water

Completely true.

But now I see that you're in NYC, pulling it out on a subway platform!?!

So get a SAK, overall IMO best quality control in that price range.
And quite a few models to choose from.

IMHO the Victorinox Soldier blows the Demo Knife out of the water in terms of steel quality, design, fit/finish, etc. And you can often pick 'em up on sale for a good bit less than $20. You can also get one with a saw if that suits your fancy.

I'd consider getting the one with the saw-blade. The Demo knife is based off of the Soldier. I've seen both. The Demo knife is an over-built version. The difference in steel quality isn't huge. The finish was rougher than on the Soldier. But the fit and quality on the Demo knife I owned was just as good.

I've been carrying the Mini-Pika over my more expensive knives for a little over a month now, I really like it.

If anyone needs a short fixed-blade, with an emphasis on rust-resistance, there's the Carson F4 from CRKT. The blade is 420J2. Price = $24.99

Cold Steel Tru Flight Thrower. High flat grind, 3/16" thick, Carbon V steel, and 16.00 bucks on the 'Bay, what's not to like ;) . With a little time and ingenuity one could turn one into a great bushcraft knife. Toying with the idea myself. Carbon V holds a great edge and is pretty tough stuff.

I think that the Kershaw Vapor is around that price at Walmart. Or it might have been $29.99 or so. Either way, a good deal for a good "user". It's the knife I carry so that I don't have to mess up the beautiful edge I put on my MiniGriptilian. :D
