I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING ARROUND FOR A GOOD KNIFE FOR A LONG TIME NOW, WITHOUT ANY LUCK. I'M LOOKING FOR A KNIVE THAT IS GOOD FOR THE OUTDOORS AND GOOD FOR ANY ODD JOBS. I WANT IT TO BE A GOOD QUALITY AND A FIXED BLADE, I ALSO WANT IT TO BE AN OLD STYLE KNIVE NOT THAT NEW FLASHY LOOK. PLEASE REPLY IF YOU KNOW A GOOD BRAND, TO DECO665@SPRYNET.COM

Just bought a knife from John Greco. A-2 tool steel. His work is great and affordable. Best of all it was a pleasure to talk with him and to deal with him.

I don't know if it's custom you are looking for or factory. The custom way, the sky is the limit. You design it and someone will make it. Factory produced at good value, look at Cold Steel and Sog produce excellent knives.

Might consider the Spyderco Moran. It will handle most cutting chores with ease and fits nicely on your belt. Not flashy and it's inexpensive for the quality delivered. Or, for more money try a Dozier or Simonich utility pattern. There's lots more out there too.

You might want to take a look at the knives made by Marbles. Very traditional fixed blades with handles in different woods, micarta, stag, leather washer,or combinations of same. Efficient flat grinds and 52-100B steel hardened to Rc 59-60. Prices aren`t bad at all either. They`re carried by the Cutlery Shoppe and A.G.Russell. Marcus

Bob Dozier gets my vote here. He makes reasonably priced utility knives that can double for defense. D2, nice thin grinds, micarta scales and really fits the hands well. His included kydex sheaths are nicely executed. Nice guy too.

Bob Doizer does a great job and he's sheaths are very nice..

If you are willing to consider the price of custom knives, you might wish to look into a Randall knife. I have one that I have carried in country situations for over 30 years. I am on my second sheath, but the knife is still a wonder to behold and to use. I paid $25 for it in the fall of 1961 and my parents (I was 18 at the time) were horrified at the price! It was the best knife investment that I have ever made.

I like Chris Reeve's Mountaineer II. The one-piece construction and tough clip point blade makes a real solid and reliable package. Plus, it's got that cool hollow handle for storing small items.

The Shadow IV is great if you like "spearpoint" tips. Both come with nice leather sheaths too.
