Kershaw Cyclone 1630, hands down.

They're discontinued so you can find them around 30-35$. 13c26 blade, assisted (or not; there's an on-off switch). One hell of a knife for that money.

Spyderco Tenacious. Did everything I asked from it. Unfortunately I can't put pics right now

I gotta be "one of those" here and say... an extra 20 bucks and a CS Recon 1.

I've never been good at following rules. Atleast I didn't say Sebenza.

The middle two are the Tenacious. An extra $5 or so above that $40 gets you the Resilience, top.

I don't have one yet but the Ontario Model 1 (aka RAT 1) seems to have a pretty decent reputation. They are apparently popular with the troops oversees (I cannot cite this for accuracy)...they probably sell them at the PX I suppose. MSRP about $45 and regularly available from Internet knife stores for under $30. AUS-6 Steel which is a pretty decent, if not glamorous, stainless. It's a linerlock.

I plan on getting my stepson one for Christmas. He's not a knife guy but appreciates and cares for his tools and he recently got a house and he putters around the property a lot and having a strong folding knife will be handy.

If you go up to $60, then you're talking Spyderco Endura for sure. VG-10 is very good steel that is stainless and scary sharp and easy to maintain. The Endura is a back lock.

Was it hard to regrind this recon to this shape?

Add the CRKT M21/14 series.... with reservations

I have used it extensively and I love the auto-lawks feature, but the video nutnfancy put out with the lock failure kind of unnerved me.

CRKT is just one of those companies that I really want to like, but there is always something that kind of irks me (thin liner locks, poor blade materials, etc)

Improper batonning technique made that lock "fail."

I don't doubt you.

but my batonning technique may be imperfect sometimes  so I would feel more comfortable with a more reputable lock, in the unlikely situation I would be batoning with a folder

but your point stands, for usual tasks this knife should be excellent at price point

BTW res1cue...I'm with you on the "wanting to like" CRKT....but you are right, it's "always something" with their stuff.
