best leather dye to match ironwood (for sheath)

Most of the time I stick with black for my sheaths as I think it is clean and goes with most any attire a person is wearing (finished with Fiebing's Leather Sheen or Tandy's Satin Shene).

But I've got this ironwood handled knife that really would look swell if the sheath color was close to it.

What color dye would you folks recommend? I have only used Tandy/Fiebing's die so far...but I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks!
Nick

but i have my leather man use a chocolate brown that i think really complements ironwood. dont know the brand.

this is Fiebing's med brown antique (stain) the dark Brown
may work well for you. you can make the antique look
mimic the wood graining somewhat too,

although this isn't the best pic, if you look closely I used dark brown with a q-tip applicator to create an underlying wood grain pattern, then went over everything with a dark brown/tan mix, Feibing's dyes from Tandy....

Chocolate although I can't tell much difference from it and black plus it taste simular to Jim Beam, just don't swallow it.....

Nick, if you want a antique look, get a bottle of liquid brown shoe polish, the ones with the sponge applicator. then just dab away until you get the look you want. Holds on well and appears to water proof fairly well. Just try it on a piece of scrap first. ;) Other then that I would use med. brown dye.

that is one of my own thank you:)
it's my seigneur sheaths if I spelled that right? :)

Try the hot wax dip method. You can put some dyes on before to obtain
the antique look.
don't leave it in more than about 2-3 seconds or you'll find out about the random shrinking method.

Nick, my friend---It would be difficult to find better dyes than Fiebing's. I prefer the professional oil dyes but the spirit dyes are available in more colors and less pricey. At the present time The Leather Factory has the Professional Oil dyes on sale at $17.00 a quart which is a decent price. As to your stated preference for dyeng your sheaths black, I will sell 15 sheaths in Saddle Tan for every sheath in Black. Black is preferred for the tactical knife but falls short in all else!----Sandy

Nick I've had great luck mixing my own custom colors from Fiebing's. Naturally this takes testing on scrap and can commit a lot of dye. Good colors to work with are Dark Brown, Light Brown and Yellow. I can make about any shade of "brown" from those. The potential downside is a lot of bottles of custom colors sitting on the shelf! :D
