Best lighter?

I have bad luck with lighters. If I thought I wouldn't lose it, I'd get an S.T. DuPont, the Sebenzas of the lighter world.

I couldn't resist the cool factor of a red flame from the Solo Slim Laser. The 3700 degree ignition is a cool factor too. Now I can fire industrial ceramics with my lighter.

Also expensive, but this puppy really works!

Yes, this was my choice, too. Easy to source in the UK - I got mine from Iwantoneofthose.com
I've used it for a year with no problems at all. I'd agree, though, you shouldn't give people lights with it.

Isn't it fun, though?

I bought a Blazer micro torch in 1996. It's the original PB207 (same as illustrated above). I've refilled it over a dozen times. It's helped me unthaw locks (winters suck up here), and start countless fires, as well as solder.

I've had it in my pocket every single day since I bought it and it's never failed me yet. 2 of my friends bought one at the same time I did, and theirs still work fine too. However, about a year later, 10 or so of my friends bought a cheap imitation. I don't think that any still work...

bics work fine ive got one watterproofed in each one of my kits. Why pay 100 for a damn lighter. oh yeah brunton helios is a windmil in pretty packaging. one of my guys has both and was pissed they even come in the same tins.

Pete,

How do you waterproof a bic? Pics?

Or are we talking about a small ziplock bag or something like that?

Thanks,

Ryan

I'm with the other Blazer guys. I only use mine to light cigars but it's gone thru alot. I'm always tempted to buy something new but why change a good thing. Best part is that Mikes Cigars gave them away for awhile. I must have had 10. Gave most to friends who admired mine.

I just got a Helios and all I can say is WOW. I love this lighter when you push down the button you are welcomed with a glow that lights up a dark room. The only complaint I have about it is that the top flap when its open is a bit flimsy, to me it seems it should have been engineered differently so that it would be more secure in the open possion. Just my 2 cents. O and just to show you what others think, now I have to get one for my dad for xmas it can light his cigars fully in about a second. Beats the hell out of the $5 lighters and matches.

Man I don't like those brunton helios lighters. I think they are pieces of ****. I had one and the top was really flimsy and it wouldn't light half the time when brand new and filled up with fluid. so I brought it back, got a new one and it did the same thing. You have to ask yourself what you are using your lighter for. I'm a smoker, Ive got a bic. You can get a zippo at walmart for like 10 or 12 bucks. I love walmart.

Ive had lighters that dont light often this one has worked almost every time Ive fired it Id say in about 50 lights it failed 3 times. I can live with that, as for the top.. as I said it is crappy but I can live with that too bad its not made in solid metal with ball bearings on the hinge instead of plastic and a spring. As for the power, waterproof, and windproof I can vouch for all of those.

After reading threads from the other forumites here, I am convinced that I should get a Blazer pocket micro torch. At first I wanted to get a Windmill from the forum store, but after listening to others' testimony I changed my mind. It seems that the Blazers are not easy to find here in the USA, though. It's too bad that the forum store doesn't carry them, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

PS I'm not a smoker but I realize the need for a reliable source of flame, esp. when cutting synthetic webbing and paracord

I just ordered a windmill from 1sks.com as a little birthday present to myself. I'm not a smoker, just a fire bug :D I also got a chive cuz dagnabit they look really cool and I always wanted one. When my toys arrive (probably monday if it ships today like im hoping) I'll try to give my initial impressions of the windmill.

I bid on a Dupont on Ebay a couple of weeks ago but didn't get it. Wicked expensive but they look to be the best of all of them. The Dunhills are also very nice and I could easily go with either. I have had a Prometheus and loved the look but it didn't last all that long.

My current pet peeve is the crappy finish on most of these lighters. They seem to have all gone to metal coated plastic for the bodies which inevitably wears off in short order. Many have flimsy parts as you all have noted.

It ticks me off because if I'm going to spend big bucks on a nice lighter I want it to LAST dammit! I had a heavy old flint and butane lighter which I got when I worked in a pipe shop many years ago. Retail on that lighter was $35 or so in 1985. It had a gold electroplated finish and was a pipe lighter. Can't even read the name on it now because the bottom is so scratched up. That thing lasted for 10 years of daily use (I used to smoke). It was lost several times and returned to me. I found it recently in a box of stuff and it still looks pretty good. I flicked it open and struck the worn out striker cylinder. It lit on the first try. I miss that thing! Too bad it can't be rebuilt. :(

Currently using a 1 year old Windmill from EMS with their logo on it. It's losing the finish from pocket wear and lighting is starting to get dodgy. All that is out there seems to be crap right now.
