Best Lightweight Large Folders

Good question. I'd have to check @ home ... hopefully somebody has one handy. But I will check...

Appreciate it. Even being a two-hander isn't a big deal to me, though. When you're a lefty with a cane mostly in your right you can't let "the little things" stop you from using a knife you like. ;)

If I were you I'd look for a used Endura on the Knife Exchange. The Endura is one of my absolute favorite large knives and it should be easy to get a cheap one.

Here is a search of "Endura" in post titles in the for sale by individuals section ordered by date: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/search.php?searchid=10362297

Hi brancron,

I do have an Endura and love it as well. So much in fact it doesn't get carried as often as it should. ;) It's one of those knives I feel like I might get a back up for one day, even though its relative ease of acquisition and price make that kind of a stupid buy... Oh well.

Yes, the Kabar Dozier thumb stud is reversible.

Another one I'd cast my vote for is the byrd Cara Cara 2 in either FRN or G-10. Both have a 3.75" FFG blade. The G-10 is 4.25 oz, but the FRN is an extremely lightweight 2.5oz. Either can be had for under $30.

If you love your Endura, see my previous post. The byrd Cara Cara 2 is an Endura you won't worry about needing a back-up for.

Thanks, Max. Would you say my earlier assessment of the Cara Cara 2 being a more inexpensive Endura is accurate, or no? I like the line, but haven't really pulled the trigger on any Byrds yet.

Edit: Just saw your most recent post, nevermind. ;)

Cold Steel Recon 1. The XL is ridiculously huge and it's light for it's size. I think it's over a foot long with the blade out:

Yep, I used to have that one but I gave it to someone on here because I liked the Voyager series better and they were similar enough (at least to me) that I knew I likely wouldn't really use the Recon-1 with the Voyager around.

I like the Spartan, but it's almost "too big and overcompensating", although it is indeed light for its size.

Seeing the Endura mentioned doesn't surprise me, but the fact that I didn't see the Stretch mentioned does. Hardly inexpensive, but it's one hell of a knife and comes in at 3.5oz if I recall correctly.

Treat yourself to a Spyderco Military. You won't regret it.

+1 for the Military. It's outside of the price range you specified, but it's worth depriving yourself of multiple cheaper knives to save up for it. It carries so well and feels amazingly light for its size.

Kershaw Thermite is rather light for the amount of knife you get... Problem is on that price range, much weight is shed through titanium liners and such, lightweight scales, etc, which all starts driving price up, so lighter weight Knives start costing more, and vice versa cheaper Knives often pack on a little extra weight, but there's a few happy medium options out there.

Slight tangent, but what about the Voyager did you prefer? I have a Recon 1 but have often considered getting a Voyager instead...

RE the Cara Cara, this isn't my pic but there are a lot of comparisons out there of the two. I've only handled the Meadowlark 2 and definitely prefer the Spyderco handle design though I appreciate the Byrd's index-groove, similar to the Caly3

Hi Chiral,

For me, the Voyager's handle was a bit more comfortable and better to handle given it is ever so slightly wider, while not being too wide. In addition, It is easier to get in and out of the pocket as handle material is less "grippy". And although I like a number of coated knives, when stacked against each other I prefer the satin finish of the Voyager. In most respects I'd say they perfrom about equally, and they each have same-size counterparts, which is nice. Those were just my preferences.
