Best "little knife"?

man, they're discontinued, but the Spyderco Salsa may also bre a winner.

I know the question was about folders, but I have to put in a plug for my cheapie FB Colt Mini Guardian. I clip the point of the scabbard to a belt loop and dangle the handle into a back pocket. No one has ever noticed it. It doesn't even look like you're carrying a knife. It's sharp as two hells, deploys faster and easier than any folder, and of course will never fold up on you. And if you lose it, no big deal. And it's small enough that it'd take some kind of mega super-pansy to get offended by it.

But if it must be a folder, I can recommend the Ken Onion Rainbow Chive or the CRKT Peck, both of which are inexpensive and very sheeple-friendly.

I'd also recommend a small fixed blade from Bark River; they make a wide variety of pocket-sized fb's.

Assuming you can legally carry a fixed blade inyour pocket, one of these would be ideal. They're so small that it's pretty much impossible to look at them as weapons, they're not very scary since they don't pop out quickly like a one-hand-opener, and they're just as quick & convenient to use as a one-hander.

I've owned a Benchmite, and whilst they are cool, their lock of a pocket clip hurts them a lot.

I've tried a lot of small folders, but the big winner was my greg lightfoot urban shark.

The wegner mouse is pretty cool.

The mini mojo is very nice, but the AO might scare folks.

Spyderco Navigator...

Don't forget multitools. They're big and obvious, but apparently, harmless.

If you want to stick to the minigrip, look for one of the old ones with purple handles etc. Purple/pink knives are totally nonlethal, unlike their black counterparts.

puukkoman, those Bark River FB's are cool as hell. The only problem I'd have is crying if I lost one. Yeah, I guess around here $75 is a cheap knife, but... anyway those are on my Christmas list now.

PS: OMF? OMFG!

Benchmade benchmite. It is not a 1 hand opener, but I think that makes it more sheeple friendly. Small, slim, sharp, and handy. And, at the street price I wouldn't mind too much having it confiscated by some overzealous campus cop.

I really love my Fallkniven U2. It is a great little knife. It is VERY non knife people friendly.

I decided to settle on a Spyderco Spin from newgrahams.com.

Even though the small fixed blades look promising, I prefer folding knives since they are more compact.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

My favorite small knife is the Buck 503. The 501 is also nice, and big enough to do some more heavy duty cutting if you need it. Find an older one with 440C and you'll be set... they're a bear to sharpen, but they'll get scary sharp.

The small knife that's growing on me lately is the Spyderco Cricket. But it's not one I'd clip, unless you use it as a money clip in your pocket. If I EDC'd my Cricket, I'd take the clip off and just drop it down in the bottom of my pocket.

We weren't supposed to have knvies on campus (state university laws), but I was lucky to go to a very liberal school that didn't have a problem with pocket knives carried responsibly. And being in the mountains it wasn't uncommon or frowned upon to have a fixed blade on your belt as long as you weren't sitting in a classroom.

I have to second the mention of the Meerkat; a lot of people dislike the Phantom lock but it's a definite no-fingers-in-the-way closing, plus it has the low-profile clip. The only thing is that it is a definite RH-only folder and mine has developed quite a bit of bladeplay, but I don't know how representative that is.

The Meerkat and the PE Cricket are the two most 'sheeple' friendly folders I can think of, yet they can handle most things thrown at them; the Cricket especially is an astonishingly good slicer.

Hey All,

Thanks for the comments on the Bark River OMF. It's a great little knife--2.6" blade, under 6" OAL. It has A2 steel, convexed to wicked sharp and easy to maintain. Just about the most perfect little knife I've ever seen (I love the semi-wharcliffe blade shape).

Anyway, I got the kydex sheath from Reid (Sharpshooter) over on the OMF forum. Great guy and very quick.

Cheers,
Daniel

PS. The blade very sturdy--.15 thick, I think--and this knife is really strong for its size.

Be aware that most colleges and universities have rather strict rules about
possesing anything that can be construed as a weapon.

In Ky one cannot carry a concealed weapon on a campus even though
you might have a CCW.
