  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Best loaner knife (under $20?)

OK, there have been a slew of "best knife for x" posts, but I'm not sure this has ever come up.

The situation is this: All of your coworkers know you're into pocket knives and invariably you're the person they ask when they need to open a package (or whatever). But, you're carrying a nice high-dollar folder that you don't necessarily want to be abused (imagine someone prying off a bottle cap with your William Henry Lancet).

So, one solution is to carry a cheap but respectable "loaner" in the other pocket. I'm thinking something under $20 or $25, not too big and certainly very sheeple friendly.

I was thinking maybe a Spyderco Ladybug or the little Cold Steel keychain folder.

What would you folks pick?

how about a sak, comes in handy when someones wants to pry a bottle cap off they can just use the bottle opener

Try a Victorinox Adventurer SAK (around $18.00 plus shipping on the web). It has a locking 3.25" blade, can & bottle openers, small, large, and phillips screwdrivers, awl, toothpick, and tweezers. It is large enough to do some serious work and small enough for daily carry.

I have a long standing policy. I don't lend out my knife. Period. Hard policy but I learned the hard way. Now I will offer to cut whatever it is the other party needs cut.

And since they NEED a knife, everyone needs a knife, I suggest they go buy one and make some recommendations. Or if they are close friends I might just make a gift of a knife to them.

Gerber EZ-Out Jr., or a Buck lockback of some sort. These knives are normally pretty inexpensive and work really well for average tasks.

Old Timer Medium stockman. $15-18 at Home Depot or WalMart. Easy to sharpen and 3 different blades for them to cut themselves with.

Thanks guys, all good suggestions.

I think I'll go for a Victorinox Electricion actually, looks like a nice compact collection of usuable tools. It should compliment either a larger "tactical" folder or a more high-end "gents" knife.

Carry a REALLY dull cheap knife with you. See how often your coworkers come back to ask you to borrow it. Except maybe to put butter on a slice of bread. he he.
