Best Long underwear?

Two companies make excellent base layers I have used extensively. Smartwool is great, especially if you're looking for wool. Patagonia makes the most complete system of base layers from stuff that actually COOLS you to expedition weight stuff people travel to the tops of mountains wearing. Patagonia is bombproof, too, and will last forever. They're great about repairing holes, wear and tear, stitching if it comes loose, etc. AWESOME company.

If you have an Eastern Mountain Sports nearby (not sure if they have them in Florida) their long johns are great. I've got a bunch in different weights and they've held up nicely through the years. Excellent guarantee as well. Mine were called Bergelene, but I think they may have changed the name recently. Also, they're a bit cheaper than some of the big name stuff.

Woolpower I get mine from havealifeoutdoors.com They are merino wool which is proccessed so that it doesn't itch and outlasts most others (all that I've seen) 2 to 1 at least.

Patagonia's Capilene works great, and seems to last forever. I think you'd have a difficult time finding better long underwear. It's also pretty expensive. I got mine long ago when I was able to get pro deals.

I ordered the Patagonia Capilene Midweights (level 3s) from REI. I should have them by monday and the temp should be in the 30's on Tuesday. Yesterday it was around ninety degrees at my place and I was swimming in my pool. 30's is no big deal if you are used to it, but I have not seen anything below 67 for well over 6 months.

I'll try to get online and do a review later next week.

Thanks all.

Mulder, what are the Filson long-johns like? I am what they would consider a "tall". What is the inseam on the pants, and are the sleeves long enough? I'd be wearing a 2X top and probably XL bottoms.

And more importantly... what are the actual long-johns like? I am a big wool proponent too, but do like the ability to machine wash/line dry these if possible. Mongo don't do dry-clean!

Mongo,

I wear a XL top and XL bottom but have short stubby legs (30" inseam) and the long johns are toooooo long for me.
I'll get mine out tonight and measure the inseam and sleeve length now that they have been washed a dozen or so times.
They are truely non itch but then again I wear a Johnson coat most of the time (http://www.johnsonwoolenmills.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=JWM) and those can be a little scratchy.
I haven't used them yet here in AK but many many times back in ME. and they kept me warm as toast worn under an old set of firemans bunker pants.

Just measured the Filson's.
Sleeve length is 33"
Inseam length is 31" (remember that they should be ankle length and not normal pant length)

I'll vote for the UnderArmour too. You need a bank loan to get them but they do work well.

I wear Columbia long underwear in the winter. I wear it for at least 10 hours a day. It's very comfortable and breathes pretty well. The Columbia long underwear was half the cost of UA last year when I bought it. I was dead set on buying UA but I figured for the cost difference I might as well give the Columbia's a try. I'm glad that I did and I plan on using Columbia long underwear exclusively this winter.
