Best Man Gift, Gentlemans Knife Suggestion.

I agree with the GEC suggestions. I think the single blades would go over well, they look classy - Farmer, Scout, even Linerlocks and Lockbacks. The GEC Farmer in Blood Red Bone is particularly handsome.

If possible, you should try handling a GEC before purchasing. The pull on them (the amount of force required to open the blade) is commonly described as nail-breaking. Although there are probably not a lot of brick-and-mortar GEC dealers out there.

You may want to reconsider 1095. Just look around this forum for "patina" and it might change your mind about how well these knives age.

I gave Kershaw Leeks go my groomsmen and the pastor. They were engraved by our local jeweler with our names and the wedding dates and "Thank you".

Case Eisenhowers are nice. A popular Case distributor is featuring Case knives right now with scissors and bails. I think the prices were from $40 to $150 depending on blade finish and scales.

I went with a Cutco Fisherman's Solution and had their names engraved on the blade. The ones that don't fish I got a Hugo Boss belt. I was also considering a watch, Orient Mako XL. If your thinking knife for sure a Benchmade Griptillian is a good pick. Although not really a dress knife.

Do you really want to spend $100 on a knife for a non-knife person who may not use it or even appreciate it? How about a CRKT Centofante Tribute for about $25? It's the classyist looking knife that I own.

A.G. Russell sells some great looking and affordable "gentalmenly" knives. I like this wharncliffe for myself:

The Spyderco Sage 1 has textured Carbon Fiber. Its a really nice knife and its fit and finish is superb! Got mines for $99.95 shipped!

Here's A Few That Could Work:
*Case XX Back Pocket - Probably The One With The G-10 Or Ebony Scales, And It Has A Lanyard Hole So You Could Tie Him A Personal Lanyard On It.
*Al Mar Falcon Ultralight
*Benchmade - It's A Small-Ish Knife And It's Simple Yet Very Nice And Useful And Isn't Threatening, Would Look Great With A Tux.
*Benchmade 707 Sequel - Again Really Simple But Nice - You Can Pick It Up For $100 Or Less Here On The Exchange Pretty Often.
*Benchmade Griptilian Or Mini Griptilian Black/Satin Or Black/Black - 550, 551, 555, 556.
*Benchmade Mini Presidio Or Mini Presidio Ultra - Most Of These Knives I'm Listing Are More Modern But Look Nice And Would Work As A Gentleman's Folder In A Tux Or Just For Regular EDC.
*Benchmade 710 - Big But Really Nice Looking - You Can Pick It Up Cheap On The Exchange.
*Boker Plus Anti-MC Ceramic Pocket Knife w/ Titanium Handle
*Boker Plus Anti-Grav Ceramic Pocket Knife w/ Carbon Fiber

I really like the Boker Plus Titanium Blues button lock folder. It's a slightly smaller version of the carbon fiber handled Boker mentioned previously. The A.G. Russell titanium button lock is another excellent choice.

Buck 500 series. May want to check out the custom shop, but could exceed $100 depending on options. Easy in the pocket, classic design.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm not really a fan of SAK's but what does everyone think of http://www.victorinox.com/us/product/Swiss-Army-Knives/Category/Everyday/Classic-SD-Sterling/53039
please tell us you are not seriously considering that. If you are seriously considering a small SAK, I would suggest something that has a large enough blade to be useful. An Alox Cadet is a nice small knife, although I would still go with something a bit nicer. You might consider going to the A.G. Russell website and look at the A.G. Russell brand knives. There are some very classy knives that easily fit within your budget.

Hey guys, I'm new so I hope I put this in the right spot. I'm looking for a gift for my best man. I saw a few posts about gentleman's knives but haven't really seen what I'm looking for. I want to spend around $100. Some background for my best man; He's 31, and a hairdresser(straight, and we make fun of him all the time). He mostly wears jeans and a tshirt to work, although sometimes dress pants, he likes expensive shit (drives a mercedes). He doesn't currently EDC a knife at all, but I think it could be something cool for him and hey....I like knives. I've looked at a few Case knives, and so far they seem like it could be my best bet. I need something classy, timeless and meaningful, for ~ $100. Any help is appreciated.

First off, you need to ask yourself some questions about your friend.

1. Does he own any knives at all (other than in the Kitchen, or Scissors)?
2. Is the competent enough to use a pocket knife without cutting himself (and also, could he use a slip-joint, or should he have a locking folder)?
3. How would you describe his "style"? (Does he wear cowboy boots or does he prefer a more urban look? Does he like wood-grain or carbon-fiber in his cars? Does he wear more modern watches or something more traditional? Does he carry a lot of crap in his pockets? Does he like the latest and greatest sort of stuff or does he appreciate old-world craftsmanship?)

I'd say something in a nice traditional slip-joint, or lock-back if he's into more traditional stuff, and a higher-end Swiss Army Knife or a modern-day locking knife in carbon-fiber or Ti if he's into the newer stuff.

Considering that he's not a knife-guy to begin with, I would go smaller than larger - that Sterling Victorinox you posted is nice, but it really doesn't offer a lot over a simple Victorinox Classic model other than it's made from Sterling silver (and the standard Classic can be had for under $15). Victorinox make a Silver Cigar cutter (if he smokes cigars) that is unique.

For traditional knives, I like these:

Boker Carver's Congress in Rosewood:

GEC's Conductor in Cocobolo:

Case's Canoe in smooth chestnut bone:

If you look around, you can find an Al Mar Hawk for just over $100:

For more modern-day knives, you've got several choices.

Benchmade's Small Bone-Collector can be had in Walnut or Greeen 3D G10 for around $100

Benchmade's Emissary is just over $100 with Benchmade's factory coupon/discount at a lot of online places right now:

Spyderco's G10 Dragonfly is a good choice for a smaller knife, but slightly larger is the Chaparral:

Spyderco's Sage is slightly larger, but just as nice:

Kershaw makes several variants of the Leek and Scallion that are very gentleman-like.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm not really a fan of SAK's but what does everyone think of http://www.victorinox.com/us/product/Swiss-Army-Knives/Category/Everyday/Classic-SD-Sterling/53039

I carry the Swiss Army Classic SD daily, but I like the toothpick and tweasers. Its more of a mini-tool than a gentlemen's knife though. An Al Mar hawk (that was suggested) would be hard to pass up. Spyderco Paramilitarys are still popular too, but then again, I would think that the owners of ParaMilitarys are gentlemen in general -Kind sirs- lol

I always thought traditional slip joints look a bit too "rural". I'd go with something more modern like that Spyderco Sage or that Emissary.
