Best metal protectant !!

Well I am going to throw another product into the mix, Howes Lubricant. I have been using this on everything for the last 10 years and it's the best I have found.

I have not heard of Boeshield t9 or EEzox, but that's why I love this forum, information.

I may give them a try but I know that Howes is good stuff.

Just bought 4oz of boeshield. OP, you better be right! lol

I would not have recomended this product so strongly to a bunch of knife junkies if I didn't believe it was an excellent product. This stuff is excellent and you will enjoy it. 4OZ will last you a loooong time.

The point about food safety is important. If you're planning to cut anything that's going to be eaten, you need to completely change the products you're considering.

I agree completely. I am pretty sure Boeshield is toxic, and should not be used on knives involved in food prep. I use my knife for yard work, opening boxes, general utility, and last resort self defense. If rust and corrosion resistance as well as lubrication are you main concern, and the knives you treat are not for food prep, Boeshield t9 is at the top of my list.

Where would one find Boeshield and the other few specific protectants mentioned here? Is it a general hardware store product, or more of a specialty "unlikely to get anywhere besides internet" item?

I've got Rem Oil, WD 40, Tuff Glide, Marine Tuff Glide wipes, Boeshield T9, also have EEzox, nothing and I repeat nothing works like EEzox. That said I don't use any of this stuff on my knives as all of my knives are used to either clean wild game and or food prep at camp or abroad. We use it on guns and some other gear, and the stuff is sick and I'm fairly certain Toxic as all get out.

On knives I use a syringe and just place a small amount of Olive Oil or Mineral Oil on the pivot and that is it, I never treat my blades except with the occasional dish soap (Dawn), soft cloth and water wash down.

Well, Boeshield T9 is made for bicycles, so if you're looking for a b&m store, I'd try your local bike shop. I got mine from Amazon. Lubes/rust protection like Militec 1 that are marketed for use on guns can be found at places that sell guns. Eezox is a little more general usage, so it's found in gun, outdoor, and some sports stores (they have a list of dealers on their website).

I use olive oil.:o

When I did a lot of 18th century living history, we used olive oil as a historically documented and correct lubricant and metal preservative. It worked very well, with two caveats. First, it's not going to work very well in immersion/spray situations, I would guess. Second, if you let it sit, it will polymerize and become tacky. It's not that hard to clean up, but that might be a consideration.

Has anyone had any experience using Ballistol? So far it's worked well for my guns...

I've used Ballistol as a rust preventative for some low-grade steel and iron goods stored over the winter in my garage (MA, pretty high humidity and adverse situation). It worked perfectly, which I admit surprised me a bit.

I buy mine at a local marine supply store.

Plain wax has always worked great on knives, guns, gear, cars... Stays where you put it and doesn't migrate like oil or grease, doesn't attract dirt nor does it seep into your leather sheaths or clothes.

Eezox here, for anything that's not used for food prep. That stuff's capability to prevent corrosion is absolutely amazing. For stuff that sees food contact, I use mineral oil regularly applied.

Eezox is the best rust inhibitor known to modern man. What Neanderthal used I don't know. It is a thin film lubricant of low viscosity that will of course run but dipping then removing after an hour or so will leave enough to coat the average knife and its innards for some time.

My vote go for Eezox for sure.
Best one by far.

Boeshield is at my local hardware store, and also in one of my local bike shops. I would not be surprised to learn it is also at some other places in my relatively small town.
