Best Mini/Small Kit 'Bag' for Water Storage? ? ?

Condoms work very well. Can't remember where I saw the picture, think it was Ranger Rick's old site, but the thing will carry several GALLONS without breaking. Try it in your bath tub, you'll be surprised.

I did, tested Trojan plain unlubed' ones, with a measured 1 gallon in them, dropped from any higher than about 12-18 inches up, everyone busted against a smooth fiberglass bathtub bottom, except for one and it sprung a leak on impact.

Just cant bring myself to trust them for survival water carry.

(don't have any little "bear claws" running around either!) :D

shot of the 1 qt vs MRE bag- the MRE bag has about half the capacity and doesn't stand up, but I think it's about the same mil and pretty sturdy- would pack up a little smaller too

Nice, good call!

I have some of those MRE Hot Bev Bags....

I will use those, when I dummy the kit up....

Nice!

mtwarden, I especially like how the 1 qt bag is precisely the right size for a single MicroPur Tab. As said above, they can fold up small enough for a Ritter PSP or similar mini kit. Nice backup.

Hey Marion, I've had great luck with the Aqua Pouch (first one on the page)...I've heard their emergency 1 liter pouch roles up quite compact as well. I really like the Aqua Pouch...it folds up nicely, stout material and two grommets to attach some 550 cord to serve as a sling. It opens completely up (like a Ziplock) which makes it easy to fill and has the 1 liter mark to make purification calculations easy. Another good option, depending on your kits size, are the Platypus collapsible bottles; I have a few of the .5 and 1 liter bottles which roll up pretty compactly. The added benefit is the attachment of Aqua Mira's Frontier Pro water filter (with as a gravity set up or pressure filtered directly from the bag).

ROCK6

Based on a past post/recommendation by ROCK6, I picked up a .5L Platypus bottle to go with my Frontier Pro filter.

I just tucked everything (filter, bottle, and instructions/extra filters) in a quart Ziplock and put it in my pack.

As ROCK6 points out, the Platypus bottles are available in a 1-liter size as well.

almost all of my water bottles are platys- I have some that go 7-8 years back

for a small survival kit though, they are much too big- for a pack not a problem and that's what I'd be carrying in a pack :)

Well, the gallon is an example of what it will do, not what you should carry. A quart or half quart is more reasonable.

How did the ziplocks, turkey bags and others handle this test? I doubt they could be dropped either.

I suspect the platypus could be. But they won't fit in a microkit (or in your wallet).
