I have recently become very addicted to using my vintage Schrade SS825. At 3.5" it carries very well. It did get me thinking about what are the highest quality stockmans these days but are not customs. Any suggestions that have consistant quality and good steel that are in the 3.5" - 4" range?

Queen for blades in D2 - which is stain resistant

Eye, Moore Maker, Great Eastern for those in carbon steel

They are the ones I like anyhow :) and they all have models in the size range

There are others like Bulldog, Boker, Hen and Rooster etc. but I found they had some drawback or other. ... sluggish backsprings for example or fit and finish issues

The Case 6347 has always been my favorite.Pretty large, about 4" but everything is smooth and rounded off so that it slips in your pocket easy.Vintage examples have CV or s. steel.Im not sure about the new ones.

I've been carrying these two lately. The Mooremaker had been my favorite, but this Queen #9 has really won me over.4 and 3 1/4 inches respectively

I like the buck 301 the best. I like the 3 back springs vs 2 because the sheepsfoot blade isn't bent and don't rub in your palm when you use the main blade. It's 3-7/8 so it's a nice in-between size.

The Case 63032 stockman is about the same size as the knife you are using. It is available in CV in Chestnut bone and Amber bone. The 6347 is available in CV in the burnt Sambar Stag series.

I have a Canal Street Cutlery stockman that I just picked up. It's 420 stainless. I don't know anything about how it will hold up, but it is pretty. One thing that I found a bit unusual (at least to me) is that the blades are polished on the mark side and fine satin finished on the pile side. It's just a touch bigger than the Case 6347.

Hope this helps.

These are some of the Stockman knives I have. The first three are readily available. The fourth is not made anymore but can be found easily on the used knife market. All are very capable knives with very good fit and finish -- the Schatt & Morgan's fit and finish is excellent.

Good quality stockman all, the Queen scale is exceptional. Right now I think the best Buck for the Bucks......sorry, couldn't stop myself......is the new yellow scale with blue shield. The Dymondwood gets second because its scale can vary color from side to side, unless you go pick the knife in person..........300Bucks/ch

If you can find one of these 2010 Boone and Crocket models in the 301 tin, with a little discount, it wouldn't be bad either. Green paperstone. 303 Stockman on top.

And if you like this sort of decoration, deep etched elk tracks on one side, you can still find these elk scale 301s at different buying spots.

I'm kind of surprised at all the Buck 301 responses, even though it's the knife in my pocket most of the time. It's a really solid knife, but I've never had a Case or Queen to compare it to. I do like it better than my Old Timer and Boker stockman knives though, and I don't see it ever letting you down.

I can't say that they are the best, but these are my favorites.. There are so many choices, I could never call one "The best".

I just picked up a 2004 Case two blade Texas jack (62032) in CV. I'm not sure if it's considered a stockman or not but I prefer two blades to three and it's right around 3.5"

I was very impressed with the overall quality of this Case and the bone on this particular one is nicer than most of the pics I've seen online. I was pleasantly surprised with the knife in general.

What he said. It isn't as fancy as my Queen, but I like the 301 layout better.

My favorite is this S&M Series 17 2007, Red Jigged bone in 420HC 3 1/2"
At 3 1/2" it is heftier than the Case 3 5/8", and the blades are longer.
It has the same size main blade as a Queen Mini-Trapper
The steel takes a very fine edge and says sharp

I'm a huge fan of the stockman pattern but there's no way I could pick a "best" out of the ones I own.

I feel it's relatively safe to say that you will be happy with nearly any good example from any of several of the top manufacturers. Pick the one that appeals to you both in looks and features.
(You'll be back for more anyway. ;))
