Two of my favorites right there: modern materials in the Buck, old school materials & carbon steel in the U.S. Schrade.

I'd say get both of those, and you'll have a great time learning about stainless vs. carbon steels, handle shapes (the Buck is slightly different from the traditional Stockman types, IIRC), saber vs. flat grinds, etc.

(You'll be back for more anyway. ;))

Yup. Especially if you hang around this bunch of traditionalists for too long. :D

Well it has already started :) I just received to NIB vintage Schrade USA Uncle Henry 897UHs that are both perfect. I also have a Buck 301 on the way also so the addiction has started.

My favorite is the GEC equal end "Cuban Cigar" pattern #53 at 4-1/8" closed.

Here is one in snakewood with stainless blades.

They also make acrylics with 1095 steel.

Here is one in ram's horn.

They also use stag and bone in both stainless and carbon blades, but no good pics to show. Sorry! :p

I dunno... I just go this one's kissing cousin three or four days ago. I can't play with it as it is a Christmas gift so it is now off limits for a few days.

It is heavy, STOUT, well made, and rides easy in the pocket. This one will see a lot of work/pocket time. I've had a lot of stockman patterns over the years, but never one I thought I could really punish. I think this one could put up with anything I would send its way. It is my first Railsplitter. The one I have has the traditional large clip, sheepsfoot and spey configuration.

Did I say STOUT? :D

Picked up a Buck 301 that arrived this week. Looks like a nice sturdy knife but unfortunaly has some significant problems that will need to be fixed. I'm sending it back to Buck this week to get it either repaired or replaced. I can't wait to really get one that is put together well. While this one is going back I may try a local dealer so I can hand pick one. Until then my favorite continues to by my Schrade US made 897UH.

All three blades rub so bad that when I open one the next adjacent blade opens also. When closing one if the blades it sticks on the next and has to be forced closed. I'm sure Buck will take care of the issues.

Their Schatt and Morgan line is both ATS34 and 420 SS, and their Queen City line is 1095.
Thanks. I'm more interested in D2 at the moment, and was wondering about picking up a Queen made from that. :)

One Stockman I've caught a glimpse of that impresses me is the Schatt&Morgan Series IX. Not only is the bone very beautiful and has ATS34 steel but I THINK it has a modified small Clip blade instead of a Spey. Not really seen a good shot of it open, mind.

Using a slightly different take on modern, I'd say the Victorinox Electrician is a great successor and update to the classic stockman pattern. Primary spear, secondary sheepsfoot blades. You lose the Spey blade but gain a bottle opener/screwdriver/etc. and an awl. The tradeoff's worth it for me.

This is my personal favorite from the heart of slipjoint USA (Tuna Valley, PA):

The Tuna Valley 5402 Stockman in Boney Maroney, from Perry at spaceportcutlery.com. Its a cigar shaped stockman which rounds the edges and makes for a really sleek footprint. I also collect cigars and my Father-in-law is a stock contractor which may explain why this one jumped out at me. The one I ordered corresponds with my birth year (72 of 75).

These are 440c, which I know nothing about (yet)..

The Queen #9 (4" stockman) comes with D2 blades.

It's been my EDC carry now since I've had it. I have been using the main blade to cut beef with and I clean it with dish soap without any staining. The steel itself has a blue/gray hue to it whick I like. The new shield (pinned) is better than the old coined one too IMO.

Too bad they quit making these, it's nice for the price when I got it.

I need to add more to the collection.

Willgoy,
I totally agree with you on the S & M IX series. A few years back I was able to pick up a gunstock pattern from the same series. The ATS34 is a really nice user steel. It cuts incredibly well, and sharpens up nicely. I would love to find the stockman pattern from that series.

Thanks Jay:thumbup:

It's proving a rare bird to locate, but patience will be rewarded:D That whole series was very worthwhile. It's a shame in my view they downgraded the steel to a run of the mill stainless later on.
