For under $100, what's the best all around multi-tool

camping, fishing, working, general use, what's the best mix?

I still carry a Leatherman Wave (2004 style) and I especially like the one handed opening without unfolding the whole tool

let me know what you think!

Post links and Pics!

Swisstool Spirit for me.

I have not had the fortune of trying a swisstool yet, but I hear they are rock solid well built. I can't find a local dealer and dont wanna shell out the $$$ online just to test.

anyone else like the swisstools?

Thanks for the vote, westlln, and runningboar! I love my leatherman too.

My wave gets beat to death all day every day and after 3 years it's gettin tired. Though Leatherman will definately replace it, I might be interested in trying a new toy too

we'll see

I have had a Wave 2004 for a while now, have had an original Wave for a couple years before that, and just purchased a Surge. I really like the size of the blades on the Surge. My only complaint so far is that there is what I consider to be "considerable" blade play in the main blades. I would have serious doubts about doing much prying with my Surge. However, the thing comes with such a massive flat screwdriver that it is the obvious prybar choice anyway. I would recommend either the Surge or the Wave to anyone. I think they are much sturdier than Victorinox' pliers-based multi-tools (althought I LOVE Vic SAKs!). Surge is much heavier than the Wave, so perhaps I would recommend the Surge to the weekend handyman or lover of largest-possible blades. I would then recommend the Wave to the camper/fisherman/traveler who wants a lighter package and will probably have another blade or two along anyway for larger camp tasks.

the one handed opening thing is what got me into the Wave in '99

i wanted to like the models before that, but i just couldn't see the advantage over the SAK

the only reason i replaced the Wave was to get a Charge and the bit drivers and 154CM in the PE blade

the new TTi with S30v is kinda interesting, but a little pricy

i've been eyeing the Surge, but i don't think i'd EDC it

Yeah, blade material is one of the things that's got me thinking - my wave's main blade and the serrated one are starting to look the same!

Anyone a Gerber fan? How bout SOG?

I use an older Leatherman Wave (year ident 0403A). It is usually on me for short bushwalks. I carry it and other tools if the walk is longer than a day. I have tried Gerbers and various SAKs but still use the Wave.

The charge is good, the main improvment is the 154cm blade, I could care less for this because my main blade inst the one on my multitool, therefor I rarely use it. If you had a Charge for an only edc, And needed a "step up" for a mian blade It would fit the bill.

I have a LM Wave and a LM Core, I use the Core more often. Lots beefier IMO.

I have a Victorinox Spirit, original Swisstool, old style LM Wave, old style LM Supertool, and I briefly had an LM Surge.

My favorite out of the bunch by far is the Spirit, which is my main edc. I disliked the serrated sheepsfoot blade at first, but after grinding the serrations off, sharpening both sides and making it a proper plain edge, it's much better.

The old Wave stays in my briefcase and the others languish in various tool chests and glove compartments.

Just got a LM wave for xmas last year and put my Gerber in semi-retirement. I like the wave due to being able to access the blades with out having to open the tool. I also like the saw on my wave and the locking ability of every tool.
The Gerber has been with me for 8 years and served me well. I Liked being able to acess the pliers with the one hand opening. Didn't like haveing to open the tool up to get to the blades. Also if you were really using the pliers hard and it slipped off the nut you would more than likely get a nasty blood blister in the palm of your hand because the two sides of the tool would meet with part of your palm in the middle.

MY VOTE- WAVE:thumbup:
