Best Multitool For Outdoors?

I always carry a multi tool in my pack when hiking. I've never had to use it, but figured I would rather have than not have.

It started with a Gerber MP400, but this rusted like anything as soon as it got a bit damp.

For the next few years, it was a Leatherman Charge Ti.

Currently, it is a Vic Swisstool Spirit X. I like it because it is very corrosion resistant. I can leave it in my pack and forget about it.

On my person, I usually carry a Vic Huntsman or a Leatherman Skeletool.

What kind of outdoors use? I never need a screwdriver outdoors, sometimes a pliers, sometimes a scissors. So a Juice is a little lighter, and a squirt with either the pliers or scissors lighter still. If what I really need is a saw, then my Farmer is my friend. Saw and Scissors? Custom Farmer w/ scissors...

On a side note, just for cool gadget factor and use around house, in car, etc, I like the Victorinox Spirit line, think the build quality is higher, just my opinion.

Im also wanting a new multitool. The Kick has been so handy that I want to go up a step. Being a fisherman , the Leatherman Charge is attractive with its saw and diamond file.

Victorinox Swiss Spirit.

I carry and use a SOG Powerlock every day. The blade and scissors could be better but everything else works great. The al, file and saw get used frequently and do a great job. It's also really easy to change out tools on the SOG if you need something else or don't like the tool. Been thinking of changing out the main blade but I recently found it comes in handy for cutting string very close to leather, better then my Izula so I might keep it.

Vic Swisstool Spirit, is hands down, the best Multitool Ive ever used.

Best F&F, Great selection of tools, and the slight curve to the handles make it very comfy. Its also a great weight, not too heavy.

Same here. Great tool!:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks for all the replies. I`ve always liked the Victorinox Swiss Army knives, so I`ll go to Indiana to Cabelas and see if I can check out the Swiss Tool.

To save you a trip, Cabela's doesn't carry the Victorinox multitools. :thumbdn:

They only carry 5 Victorinox items, that not being one of them.:(

Although you can't try them out in hand, I've found Amazon is actually a really good place to score Victo. products. :)

I've owned quite a few of the multitools that have been released in the past couple of decades, and always find myself using my Leatherman Charge or Wave. The Charge XTi is my personal favorite, but I don't think they make them anymore.

They still list it on the Leatherman site, and the local retailers have them in stock. If they have quite making the XTi that just stinks; it is my favorite. Strong Titanium handle, locking S30V main blade, and all the tools I need around camp, while fishing, or hunting.

Another vote for the Swiss Spirit here !

Nice pic, dude! You don't happen to remember the name of that kind of lichen do you? We have it all over the place in my neck of the woods. Pretty stuff.

I like the Victorinox models best. Used to have a Leatherman but don't buy them for reasons that can only be discussed in the political forum (glad to e-mail you, if you wish). However, the Wave was the next best to the Victorinox.

Often times I feel you're better off with a good sturdy pair of pliers and a couple screwdrivers (unless you're backpacking, in which case I don't carry a multi anyway).
I think multis do an OK job performing several functions but not as well as a good tool specifically dedicated to one function.

I have to agree, I've had Leathermen, Gerber, SOG, Schrade and the Swiss Tools and I have not found any I liked better than the Swiss tools for woods bumming. They have the best saw by far and are very stout, I think they are well worth the money they cost and the weight they ad. However being a woodworker and carpenter no multi-tool pliers work as well as just a good pair of needle nose pliers.

Ahh, I am actually going to be getting myself a multitool soon, and it will be one of the Vic brand. I have had multiple leathermans, and none have failed me. However, I have handled the Vics, and believe they will be of more use to me.

Vic Swisstool Spirit kinda of a guessing game without looking at it but there are two models of the spirit.one has partially serrated blade & scissors or the one I have drops the scissor and adds a plain edge blade & serrated blade

And recently (at least in North America) you can now get one with scissors AND a regular SAK style blade as well.
