Best Natural Materials...

I was thinking it might be nice to have a thread in which we can all post pics of knives which we feel are made with exceptional natural materials.

For me, one of the things that really drew me into custom knives was the amazing variety and beauty of often rare, natural materials like various fossil ivories in so many colors and textures, great stag, pearl, whether it be white, black, brown or gold, beautifully finished woods with fine figure and color. While there are many other things I do look for in a knife, the quality and aesthetic appeal of a given natural material and how it goes with the rest of the knife are crucial, and often a deal maker, or breaker.

So, I'd like to see people post pics of the nicest natural materials they have seen, doesn't matter if you own the knife or not, if you have any pics of killer stag, ivory, pearl, whatever, on a custom knife, please post it/them.

I have lots of pics, but not nearly enough time right now to post them, so, I'll pick a few and get things going, hoping somebody will folow suit and the thread will continue and I hope maybe later tonight to get a chance to come back and post a few more. I'll just say quickly, that I'd put ivory at the top for me (Walrus at the very top), then Sambar stag, then very colorful black pearl, then, other pearls, then nice woods, yes, giraffe bone doesn't really make my list, for whatever reason, I can't bring myself to like it enough to buy a knife with it, but, I bet if a maker I liked used it and it looked really nice, I could be convinced.

So, the pics are pretty self-explanatory, with an exception.

This Hanson Handle is a fossil Walrus ivory artifact, it had been made and used by an ancient human, and recycled by Don into a tool once again, I find that rather compelling.

I have a knife coming with this, and it varies, the material that is.I have trusted the expertise of the knifemaker,to get it like the knife above, this is the look He desribed, but I've seen it different,I would love to see others, and am not trying to Hi-jack the thread. Thanks,Vince

OK, back for a minute, great stuff so far. Keith and Peter, Ron always seems to use killer stag on his knives. I wish I could find pics of a Newton stag hunter I once had, maybe the best stag I have ever seen. If I ever find it, I'll post it.

In the meantime, here are a few others, some mine, some not.

The liquid finished fossil Walrus Ivory on this Hanson folding dagger is unreal, but, yes, real, and truly navy blue. :)

Thanks for clearing that up for me Keith, here is another picture of the Sea Cow Bone I found doing a search.I think it is classy and unique.

I really like Stag more than any other material for a fixed blade. This popcorn Stag Bowie by Mastersmith Kirk Rexroat is one of my all time favorites.

EDITED TO ADD:
Man, there are some sweet knives in this thread.

This thread is so good, but you guys *really* have to learn about correcting filesizes to post on the web. Many of these photos are more than half a megabyte in size. Above this post there are 8.5 megabytes of images.... but who's counting? This negates anyone but broadband uses to ever see this.

Boy does this get fun. I'll leave most of the mammoth, stag, and white/black pearls to you guys. There is a ton of those 'common' materials.

Roger Bergh and a crazy hollow horn or bone.

Don Hanson's fresh water pink pearl stops me dead:

Jack Busfield used green jasper stone effectively:

EVERYTHING Alton D'Holder does is a standout in handle material. This is 'picasso marble':

Kaj Embretsen and a rich tan mammoth:

Steve Hoel used this creamy horn effectively:

Schuyler Lovestrand is a contender for first place with this mammoth tooth(?) handle:

Scott Sawby uses a colorful stone effectively:

The late Jim Schmidt has the wackiest piece of 'popcorn' crown stag you have ever seen on this folder:

Lastly, the reknowned and rare 'tortoise shell' with a gold foil backing, done to perfection by the late Buster Warenski:

That's enough for now. Sugar rush...!

Here ya go! The handle material EVERYONE loves to HATE - dyed giraffe bone on one of my Josef Rusnak integrals. :)

This rich colored fossilized caribou antler handle on the Schuyler Lovestrand fighter is pretty cool looking, IMO. Also, this unusual musk ox handle on the D'holder is a lot prettier in person than in that lame looking picture I shot tonight.

I saved this picture because I thought the redwood handle on this Anders Hogstrom blade was beautiful. It is one he recently finished. Who knows, maybe he will bring it over for Blade '06? A little more variety...
