Best Natural Materials...

I had to repost a smaller picture of Ari's 13-inch Don Hanson beauty. Like Coop says, a few of the pictures are larger than the screen. This is my favorite all around bowie of all time, so thought I would post this to let Ari know I am jealous and to give everybody a better look. And, how could you get a better handle for a large blade like this one?
Thanks for coming up with this thread, Ari. It is fun.

Some awesome knives, folks. VCM3, that Sawby is outstanding, I got ot handle that in Solvang.

Here's a couple that were mine from Bill Pease, he always seems to have great material. Coop did a great job, of course.

great thread with some truly amazing pieces in it. i tend to favor ivory, but i also love ebony, buckeye burl (Burt Foster & Scott Slobodian seem to get some of the best) and stag on occasion.

here's a few of the pieces with really stand-out handle material in my collection -

first up a tanto Tom Ferry did for me - said it before, and i'll say it again - one of the nicest pieces of fossil walrus i've seen

next up is a bowie that Greg Covington did that had the most beautifully figured ebony i've seen. one of the nicer blades i've seen of Greg's but the handle really sold me on this one. Greg did a great job shaping this one too - feels just right in the hand.

here's a Broadwell bowie I'd posted recently. not only a beautiful, dark brown piece of walrus, but some amazing sculpting too. really rich colors on this - not what i usually see in walrus.

last but not least, here's another walrus ivory piece. more of a typical cream color here, but a beautiful piece and nicely matched with a piece of turkish walnut. a great effort from John Davis.

This a fabulous thread. Thanks Ari!

That being said, combined with the fact that Sambar stag is my favorite.

Here is the very BEST handle material that I have ever seen. Game Set and Match, imho.

The knife isn't too bad either. If anyone has got it, and wants to unload it, you know where to find me!

jjtjr, just place image brackets around the URL;

Be sure the slash is included with the last bracket.

Great idea for a thread Ari, thanks for starting it

I love this thread - natural materials are wonderful in knives! :D

I can't believe all the beautiful knives pictured here.

For me, most Oosic is pretty ugly. However, it makes for an outstanding, durable, and stable handle, so I've been told. .

However, this piece of Oosic is an exception with respect to aesthetics. It is not nearly as porous looking as other Oosic and has fossilized into a very colorful and pretty handle material.

The Walrus who was packing this baby must have had one heck of a sex life.:D

My all time fav' bowie is the Don Fogg stag carver that was posted above.

Other nice use of natural materials:

I own this little Fogg gent, with the most astonishing walrus ivory I've ever seen:

The single most amazing handle I've seen is on Don Fogg's "Old Bone" sword:

Some amazing stuff from everyone, I only have a few minutes, but I took a few quick shots which I think better show the unreal color and texture of the deep blue, (Very) bark ivory on a Don Hanson damascus bowie. This is the true color and look of the handle, it's pretty remarkable, I'd have to put it up there as maybe in the top 3 mammoth ivory handles I have come across, can't really compare mammoth and walrus IMO, so I won't.

BTW, you are seeing both sides, one is a closeup to get an idea of the character/texture of the bark. This is a bowie I posted earlier, but in the previous, older pics, there wasn't a buttcap or finial, as now, magically, there is. :) (I didn't do it, I can't even make a decent bologna sandwich, let alone work on a knife.... :) (It was my idea about a year after I received the bowie, Don gets the rest, and most of the credit for the way cool additional work. )

You're right about that mammoth ivory being top notch, and the rest of the knives ain't too shabby either. Thanks to all who took the time to post pictures.

Ari, Those new pics really do show the true color and texture of that piece, very cool man. Thanks for the Hanson show and tell :D

Mega, that's gorgeous stuff. Are you sure someone didn't color that handle with blueberry puree....you'd better taste it to make sure.:D
