Best Oil for Preserving Wood Handles?

Remember the oil is not, for the most part, penetrating the cellular structure, that's why there is no swelling as with water. On top of this, as far as I understand, there is no crystallization - well, maybe after a very long time - with linseed oil and it remains pliable and allows the wood free movement and a free exchange of air importantly as well.

There was mention earlier of pure linseed oil turning rancid. This is something common that occurs when furniture is oiled on the inside where it is closed off from good circulation. So it's not a problem for an axe handle as long as the axe is not shut up in the cupboard for a while.
