Hey guys,

I have been looking at quite a lot of knives in the $200 and less range w/6" or more blade, and I am wondering what knives would be the best? I liked the Randall 18 but too much, so maybe a CS recon scout? I would like to hear any info. THANKS!

Here's the list from most expensive to least:
Busse basic 9
cs trailmaster
recon scout
Falkniven A1
Bushranger
SRK
Bushman

You can spend all 200 on the basic 9 or 11 dollars on the bushman. Surviving using a survial knife is going to depend more on your own abilities, but I would still get the best if I had the green to spend.

Oh another thing, the best survial knife sort or depends on what you want to do with the knife. If you are going to bash it and pound it into stumps to survive off worms and termites, the SRK would work nicely. If you are going to cut down small trees to build a shelter the trailmaster and basic 9 would work best. If you are going to really screw the blade up because it's just fun to do that stuff while out in the woods, then the bushman would be the most practical.

I will be using the knife for anything from cutting small tree limbs for a lean-to, or cleaning game, to cutting rope, it needs to be strong and larger than SRK. Maybe one of Allan's knife(he makes those custom bowies), sounds like that is a good knife!
What do you guys think?
Thanks again,
FLY GUY

How about the Becker Magnum Camp? I just whacked my way through a swamp this evening with one. Pretty decent knife and a great price.

Hoodoo:
Just got one and it is in my pickup at this moment.Going to use it as an all around.Price was right also.

McCann Puffin Magnum (approx $190).

2 types of blades finishes available, scales can be ordered in hardwood or micarta, and comes with a Blade-Tech sheath. 16 ounces, OAL 12.75", 6.5" blade length, and .187" 440C recurve style blade.

Try: http://www.mccannindustries.com/ or give them a call at 253-537-6919.

One sweet knife!

A Cold Steel Recon Scout would be a very good choice, as it is a shorter (7&1/2 inch blade) version of the Carbon V Trail Master Bowie, yet still retains the 5/16ths inch THICK blade of it's "bigger brother".

Sounds like Allen Blade could make you what you are looking for! Also, look at Chris Reeve's one piece line. You get a hollow handled knife made of a great steel for a big blade and it is super strong! You won't break the handle off of that one!

Allen Blade offers a good bang for buck value and could put a very good knife in your hands for less then $200. If you ask nice, I bet he would make it out of O-1, 5160 or, possibly even A-2 or D-2.

Almost within your budget, a steel MEUK for samller jobs and, a nice big bowie for those harder jobs where a bigger knife shines.

Stay Sharp,
Sid

I'll second the Puffin Magnum, it's an impressive piece with the recurved blade, feels great in the hand and comes with a nice sheath and Tech-lok.

Becker Campanion and Magnum Camp seem to have a lot going for them.
The Cold Steel Bushman gives a big bang for the buck.

What else, but the Randall 18!

I am really liking the Becker Magnum Camp Knife I recently acquired.

And I am anxiously awaiting the Machax which went in the mail today.

I think I the Becker Knives offer an excellent value, and the handle of the Beckers is much more durable than the Cold Steel rubber.

CS Trailmaster!!!

It's above the $200.00 mark, but well worth the extra cash.

Becker Brute.
I do not have a Magnum Camp but I hear very good things about it. The Brute is a little thicker than the MC so will probably be a better chopper (although I hear the MC is pretty mean itself...) and the Brute has a nice thick spine that can be hammered/hammered with. Very good all round outdoor knife. The MC is a better slicer....

Even though it may be slighgtly over budget, I once again have an opportunity to extol the virtues of the Chris Reeve One Piece Range including my favorite, the Project One.

I have an SRK and find it to be good value for the money. After the P-1, (above), I really like the Fallkniven A-1.

I would be less than honest if I did not disclose that I have been thinking about a Busse 9" or a Magnum Camp.
