I’m just recently getting into traditional folders coming from modern knives. I am just falling in love with the class, pocket friendliness and slicing capabilities of these beauties from days past. I have a case peanut and while it is a great utility knife I’m looking for a knife pattern that suits my needs even better as a secondary (or primary) knife. I work in an office environment and looking for an Apple peeler/slicer during the weekdays. In the weekends it needs to be a good kitchen companion. Slicing some salami or chorizo (for those wonderful wine and cheese nights), cutting grapes for the kids and that kind of stuff.

At the moment I’m looking at thee patterns (all from case, the rest is hard to come by in Europe):
-Swayback gent
-Medium Texas toothpick
-Slimline trapper

whitch of these would be the best for these kind of tasks? Or is there another pattern even better? And also being the best in the pocket. Like I said, this is a new world I am exploring. I’ve looked at sodbusters but they miss the ‘classyness’ in my opinion. It has to be a gentleman’s knife and a looker as well.
Hoping you can help me find the perfect knife!

Well is budget a factor? because there are some european dealers who may have the gec 13 congress series that is beautiful. or if you are after a slim trapper style knife, the gec 48 in muskrat blade. The Laguiole is also a considerable candidate given your European status.

I think a Laguiole knife is perfect for your purpose.

I carry a 12cm Laguiole in my pocket, but some prefer a smaller size. You can find in 10 or 10.5 cm size too. Buy one made in France.

I have also used a Case trapper, which works very well. I haven't tried the slimline trapper, but it should work fine.

I’ve looked at laguioles but the exposed tang and fat handle is putting me off. It’s less pocket friendly than I would like.

although the one in the picture looks mighty nice

Not everyone's cup of tea, I know. But when I first saw one, my eyes got wide and I said: "That's what I want!" Bought one and carry every day. Fits my hand wonderfully, and is never not enough knife! I'm going to get one with a corkscrew, too.

I love a Case Full Trapper in the kitchen, but not as much in an office... a little big and intimidating.
For a Case knife in the kitchen AND the office, I like the small Texas Jack, Medium Stockman, and Medium Jack.

Here's all three of them next to the Full Trapper

I was going to suggest an opinel as I got a new one late last year and it is lazer sharp and so thin. Wish I got the bigger 10 over the 8 as a large orange needs a rotation to cut all the way through.
Then I reread your requirements and you want it pocket friendly.

Maybe the opinel slim?

If you can push to a GEC, you'll notice a big difference in quality. 48 trapper is a great choice, slim, pocketable and classy.
If you can carry a fixed blade the gec h20 is also a great slicer/kitchen companion.

Of course, if you can find one, the Dogleg Jack is my hands-down favorite.
Basically a Mini Trapper with a Full Clip Main and Pen Secondary. Oh so nice!

Then of course if you look outside Case knives, there are a whole host of GEC knives that would fit the bill. But they are harder to acquire. ;)

The toothpick pattern I posted is very similar with a much slimmer handle:thumbsup:

Yeah the big problem is that gec is nearly impossible to find here. And buying from the states brings a hefty customs import fee on top

A Slimline Trapper or Toothpick should serve you well. If you're coming off modern knives you might want to stick with stainless steel. As has been mentioned, a Laguiole would also be a good choice.
I think a Clip blade on any of the above will be more usefull then the Wharncliffe on the Swayback, for the tasks you've listed.
Let us know what you decide!
