Best Place To Buy 2x72" Belts -- Best Price?

I use Sean Ryan at Phoenix Abrasives. AO belts are about $2 a piece, and ceramics are considerably cheaper than the name brands. I've used the name brands and can't justify the extra money for the little bit extra life I may get. Belts should be used as if they are free. The cheaper they are, the easier that is to do.

There is a lot of good information in this thread. I have always felt that a new belt that is less expensive is better than a used belt that is expensive. I am a compulsive belt buyer and cannot always say with certainty which is best so I have many Gold Cubitrons and many Norton Blaze and several AO belts and Zirc belts that are "economy" priced. I have ground hundreds of knives with blaze belts and am currently using Cubitron 984's in 60 grit to grind stainless steel. I can recommend Pop's for belts and steel as well. I also like Tru grit for their fast service. I have used Super grit and USA knife Makers as well. I guess the best thing to do is shop and keep a lot of belts around. Nothing turns around a blade going wrong quicker than a fresh belt in my opinion. Larry

I've tried MSC. I have a corporate account. We use Cubitron II flap wheels at work, thousands per year. We pay roughly 55% the price listed on the website. The quantity pricing they gave me for 984 belts was more expensive than Pop's single belt price.

Hello all,

I am building a belt grinder and need to get some 2x72" belts for it. I live in a small town and they are not sold locally, so I will need to order them on the net.

What would be the best place to buy belts on the internet? Best service and best prices are what I am looking for.

Also recommendations for brand, type, and grits to get started would be much appreciated as well. I don't have much to spend right now on them though as most of my funds have gone towards building the grinder. I would like to be able to get a variety but not spend much more than $50 to start which I know will drastically limit what I can buy.

Thanks
Greebe
We are an abrasives converter based out of California. Meaning we bring in Jumbo Rolls of materials and cut them down to any size needed.

We have great pricing on our Shredder (ceramic) 2x72 belts. We also carry every other coated abrasive needed in the knife making process.

Check out our website for info and pricing. https://www.combatabrasives.com/store/sanding-belts-2-x-72/

Also don't forget that Trugrit carries Merit red ceramic value belts in 36 grit, for $5.25... I haven't found a better price on ceramic roughing belts than that. I have used a lot of them now, the edges can be a bit rough but they cut well and are easier to discard when necessary than spendier belts.

I buy almost everything from USA knife maker. They have reasonable prices, they're a good "one stop shop" for most of what I need, and they charge reasonable shipping based on what you are actually buying, not a flat or minimum rate. I don't know about 2x72, but they have good prices on their 1x30 belts. I use Blaze belts for the majority of my grinding.

Some places have a minimum or flat shipping charge that is way too much for a handful of small things. I hate paying 10-15 dollars to ship a pack of screws or just a couple 1x30 belts.

Always check shipping, that's where a lot of places make up the difference for their low sticker prices.

I use Pops, Phoenix, Tru Grit and USA knifemaker. Phoenix if I JUST need belts, others if I need to order other items as well.

It would be great if we could get Harbor Freight, Northern Equipment or Wal Mart to source a good cheap ceramic belt line. I may send some e-mails to corporate headquarters and put a bug in their ear.

I have often thought that harbor freight would do well with a simple 2x72 grinder. Like the ones made from hollow 2" tubing.

What I like about Tru Grit abrasives is they are a real industrial abrasive supplier and carry belts from the lowest to the highest price and everything in between.

You are not limited to only a few brands or sizes there, It literally is a warehouse full of belts and knifemaking supplies

I just tried the new VSM 885 that has a finer self sharpening abrasive and it is proving to be a good choice

Tru Grit. Monstrous selection as Adam mentioned and being only a couple of hours away, I usually will get them overnight.
I agree with Salem on those Merit red ceramics. I just ground the bevels in a batch for heat treat, 55 blades total. 2/3rds roughly flat ground and 1/3rd hollow. Did the flat ground ones with one 36 belt and one 50 grit, (gators after that). New belts for the hollow ground blades and the same gators. Still have plenty of belt left on those two after the hollow grinds. I've used almost all the different ceramic belts and zircs too. These are what I keep buying.

I agree. Im pretty close to getting a 2nd 2x72. probably a grizzly cause it has a wheel on one side. Their prices are creeping up as well.

I buy from Dave Harlan Jr. at All Star Abrasives, he has great prices and quality belts. He's always taken the time to explain things to me when I needed it which has been extremely important with getting started. Never tries to sell you belts that you don't need. I always try to support businesses that are owned and operated by veterans as well, which he is.
